Job Summary The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides service to patients in designated care settings, including acute, short, and long-term care, by assisting physicians, assessing patients, and treating injuries and ailments. The NP obtains a thorough medical history from patients and performs an examination and/or assessment to determine patients needs. With other healthcare professionals, they analyze and interpret information collected from patient medical records, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop and establish an appropriate diagnosis.
The NP acknowledges and demonstrates the importance of care coordination and navigation by rounding on patients when necessary. They work in collaboration with providers and independently to provide care. Formulating a plan for treatment of the patient and prescribing medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost, as legally authorized, if necessary, to aid recovery and manage pain. The NP maintains complete and detailed records of patients healthcare plans and prognoses in a timely manner.
Consulting with or referring patients to appropriate specialists when conditions exceed the scope of practice or expertise, the NP provides patients with information needed to promote health, reduce risk factors, or prevent disease or disability. Counseling patients and family members about self-management, prevention, and treatment plans for health issues, tailoring instructions to patients individual circumstances.
The NP may cover hospital consultations, rounding, and assist with patient procedures as needed. Conducting research into the area of specialty and using findings to provide measurable improvements in patient care and clinical outcomes. Incorporating evidence-based practice guidelines into care. Maintaining current knowledge of state, legal regulations for advanced practice provider practices, including reimbursement of services. Keeping abreast of regulatory processes and payer systems, such as Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and private sources, as applicable.
Demonstrating extensive advanced knowledge of medical principles, practices, and techniques.
Qualifications Completion of a masters, post-masters, or doctorate from a nurse practitioner program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate of Nursing Education or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
Licensing prior to August 1, 1995, masters degree in nursing is preferred.
Demonstrated current competence and provision of care, treatment, or services for an adequate volume of patients in the past twelve months or completion of a masters-post-masters degree program in the past twelve months.
Experience must correlate to the privileges requested.
Current licensure by the applicable state board of nursing for advanced practice.
Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances.
Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Primary Care (CPNP-AC) or Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PPCPNP-BC) or Family Nurse Practitioner (NP-C) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC).
Current certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or an equivalent nationally recognized body.
Obtaining and subsequently maintaining required department-specific competencies and certifications.
Privileging documents and related credentialing requirements will supersede this job description in defining minimum qualifications criteria and scope of practice if variation between documents exists.
