Job Description

The Application Developer is an entry-level technical role focused on supporting business applications through bug fixes, enhancements, testing, and small development projects. This position provides an excellent opportunity to learn both legacy IBM i systems and modern technologies while building foundational skills in software development, project management, and business operations. The Application Developer works under the guidance of senior team members and contributes to the department's mission of maintaining operational continuity while driving modernization.

Job Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Development Request Triage & Management

* Review and prioritize incoming development requests, bug reports, and enhancement tickets
* Assess the scope and complexity of reported issues
* Gather additional information from users when needed
* Document issues clearly in Jira with relevant details
* Route complex issues to appropriate senior team members
* Track issues through resolution and maintain accurate status updates

Bug Fixes & Enhancements

* Fix bugs in existing applications across multiple platforms
* Make small enhancements to existing functionality
* Modify reports and queries based on business needs
* Update user interfaces and forms
* Implement minor feature additions
* Ensure fixes follow coding standards and best practices

Testing & Quality Assurance

* Conduct thorough testing of bug fixes and enhancements before deployment
* Perform regression testing to ensure changes don't break existing functionality
* Test integrations and data flows between systems
* Validate that solutions meet business requirements
* Document test cases and results
* Participate in user acceptance testing (UAT) support

Small Project Development

* Work on projects with low to moderate complexity independently
* Break down project requirements into manageable tasks
* Estimate effort and set realistic timelines for assigned work
* Code solutions following team standards and guidelines
* Collaborate with team members when encountering obstacles
* Deliver projects on schedule and within scope

Learning & Skill Development

* Develop proficiency in IBM i systems, RPG, CL, and DB2 database technologies
* Develop proficiency in modern programming languages and frameworks
* Understand business processes and how applications support them
* Study existing codebase to understand system architecture
* Participate in code reviews to learn best practices
* Ask questions and seek guidance from senior team members
* Complete assigned training and skill development activities

Code Documentation & Standards

* Write clear, maintainable code with appropriate comments
* Document solutions and technical approaches
* Follow established coding standards and conventions
* Maintain accurate technical documentation
* Update system documentation when making changes
* Contribute to knowledge base articles

Project Planning & Time Management

* Set realistic timelines for assigned tasks
* Break work into manageable milestones
* Track progress in Jira and update status regularly
* Communicate proactively about delays or obstacles
* Manage multiple small tasks and prioritize effectively
* Meet commitments and deadlines consistently

* Demonstrated interest in technology and software development
* Basic understanding of software development lifecycle

Preferred Qualifications

* Exposure to IBM i, AS/400, or similar systems
* Experience with Jira or similar project tracking tools
* Understanding of Agile/Scrum methodologies
* Any prior experience in business application development
* Familiarity with testing practices and quality assurance
* Participation in coding bootcamps, hackathons, or open source projects
* Basic understanding of APIs and system integrations
