Application / Process Engineer
Location: Charlotte, NC (Hybrid 2 days onsite, remainder remote)
Compensation: $120,000 $130,000 per year total compensation (base salary + commission), including full benefits package
Cullerton Group has a new opportunity for an Application / Process Engineer near Charlotte, NC. The work will be done onsite two days a week, with the remainder remote. During the first three months, the schedule will require being onsite five days per week for onboarding. This is a full-time, permanent position with total compensation of $120,000 $130,000 per year including base salary, commission, and full benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401k, PTO, and holiday pay).
Position Summary
This is a highly technical hybrid role that combines application engineering with process system design. You will be responsible not only for preparing proposals, pricing solutions, and supporting sales effortsbut also for designing complete water treatment systems, developing engineering documentation, and supporting internal and external stakeholders throughout the sales and delivery lifecycle. Your work will directly influence system performance, cost-effectiveness, and customer satisfaction.
Primary ResponsibilitiesPre-Sales Support & Quoting
Review RFQs and RFPs for compliance; provide exceptions or clarifications when needed
Size and select optimal water treatment technologies based on flow, pressure, quality, and process constraints
Generate proposals with detailed scope, pricing, and documentation in collaboration with the Regional Sales Manager (RSM) and channel partners
Develop process flow diagrams (PFDs) and assist the design team with general arrangement and layout drawings
Build and refine cost models, parts databases, and quote templates for accuracy and efficiency
System Design & Engineering
Design complete water filtration systems, including component selection, materials, layout, and performance analysis
Support development of piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and ensure accurate integration of control elements and instrumentation
Ensure that all systems meet customer performance requirements, internal quality standards, and relevant regulatory guidelines
Select appropriate pumps, valves, filters, and instrumentation based on chemical compatibility, flow requirements, and durability
Create part numbers, order data sheets, and BOMs to support order entry and procurement
Conduct technical kickoff meetings and collaborate with engineering, purchasing, and manufacturing teams during the project handoff
Project & Customer Support
Deliver product training and technical presentations to reps, OEM customers, and engineers as needed
Support new orders through manufacturing, testing, and delivery, working closely with cross-functional stakeholders
Maintain strong communication with customers to ensure clarity on scope, expectations, and technical questions
Review contractor reports and system feedback to inform continuous improvement and long-term support
Contribute to application and product knowledge sharing within the team
Qualifications
Required
Bachelors degree in Mechanical, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering (or equivalent experience)
35 years of experience in water treatment system design, process engineering, or technical applications engineering
Strong understanding of hydraulic calculations, pressure loss analysis, and component sizing
Proficiency with 3D CAD and process design tools (SolidWorks, AutoCAD P&ID, etc.)
Familiarity with process equipment (pumps, valves, sensors, tanks, etc.) and system integration
Strong technical writing skills for proposals, test plans, and design documentation
Excellent communication skills and cross-functional collaboration abilities
Preferred
Experience with filtration, RO, DI, or similar water treatment technologies
Understanding of industry standards (e.g., UL, CSA, ANSI, ASME)
Prior work in hybrid technical/commercial roles supporting engineered systems
Work Environment
Hybrid: 2 days in-office, 3 remote (5 days onsite during first 3 months)
Occasional travel (up to 10%) for trade shows, customer visits, or team meetings
Use of standard office equipment and engineering software tools
May occasionally lift up to 20 lbs when working with prototypes or assemblies
