The Application Architect provides strategic and technical leadership for the design, integration, and governance of vendor-supported inpatient video visit platforms within the organization's clinical ecosystem. This role ensures that virtual care capabilities for hospitalized patients are scalable, secure, interoperable, and aligned with enterprise architecture standards and patient care objectives.
The architect defines the target-state architecture for inpatient telehealth, guiding how video visit solutions integrate with EHR systems, identity platforms, clinical workflows, device ecosystems, and cloud infrastructure to deliver reliable, compliant, and patient-centered virtual care.

Key Responsibilities
Architecture Strategy & Roadmap
  • Define and maintain the target architecture for inpatient video visit capabilities across hospitals and care units.
  • Develop multi-year roadmaps aligning virtual care technologies with enterprise digital health strategy.
  • Establish architecture principles, standards, and reference models for telehealth platforms.
Solution Design & Integration
  • Design end-to-end architectures integrating video visit platforms with:
    • Electronic Health Records (EHR)
    • Identity and access management (IAM)
    • Scheduling and bed management systems
    • Patient engagement platforms and portals
    • Clinical communication and collaboration tools
  • Define interoperability patterns using HL7, FHIR APIs, and event-driven architectures.
  • Ensure seamless clinician workflows and patient experiences across bedside devices and care team endpoints.
Vendor Architecture Governance
  • Evaluate vendor solutions for architectural fit, scalability, security, and interoperability.
  • Establish integration patterns and technical standards for vendor-supported telehealth platforms.
  • Guide vendor selection, architecture reviews, and proof-of-concept evaluations.
Security, Privacy & Compliance
  • Architect solutions that meet HIPAA, HITECH, and healthcare cybersecurity frameworks (e.g., NIST).
  • Define secure data flows, encryption standards, and PHI protection controls.
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity teams on threat modeling and risk mitigation.
Device & Edge Architecture
  • Define standards for bedside devices, mobile carts, tablets, and audiovisual peripherals used in inpatient video visits.
  • Ensure device management, network segmentation, and secure connectivity across hospital environments.
  • Architect solutions that support infection control, accessibility, and clinical usability.
Cloud & Infrastructure Alignment
  • Guide deployment models across on-premises data centers and cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, GCP, AWS).
  • Define high-availability, disaster recovery, and resilience strategies for telehealth services.
  • Promote infrastructure-as-code and automated provisioning where applicable.
Governance & Standards
  • Lead architecture review boards for virtual care initiatives.
  • Ensure adherence to enterprise standards for APIs, identity, observability, and data governance.
  • Maintain documentation including logical, physical, and integration architecture diagrams.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Partner with clinical leadership, nursing informatics, IT operations, biomedical engineering, and digital product teams.
  • Translate clinical needs into scalable architectural solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership during major deployments and hospital rollouts.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and nine (9) years of experience in business analysis, business administration, engineering, information science, health, or science-related field OR Master's degree and seven (7) years of experience in business analysis, business administration, engineering, information science, health, or science-related field.
  • 8+ years of experience must be in healthcare IT, with 3+ years in solution or application architecture roles.
  • Active Epic certification required (any module)
  • Demonstrated experience designing architectures for vendor-supported SaaS platforms in regulated environments.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR).
  • Experience with identity management, API architecture, and integration patterns.
  • Deep understanding of HIPAA compliance and healthcare security requirements.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with telehealth or virtual care platforms in inpatient settings.
  • Familiarity with major EHR platforms (e.g., Epic, Oracle Health/Cerner).
  • Experience with cloud architectures in healthcare environments.
  • TOGAF, AWS/Azure/GCP, or healthcare informatics certifications.
  • Experience with device management and clinical IoT ecosystems.

Core Competencies
  • Enterprise Thinking: Aligns virtual care solutions with long-term organizational strategy.
  • Interoperability Expertise: Designs robust integrations across complex healthcare ecosystems.
  • Security by Design: Embeds privacy and compliance into architecture decisions.
  • Clinical Empathy: Understands inpatient workflows and patient needs.
  • Technical Leadership: Guides teams through complex architectural decisions and transformations.

Success Metrics
  • Scalable, standards-based architecture adopted across hospitals and care units.
  • Reduced integration complexity and improved reliability of inpatient video visit services.
  • Successful vendor integrations with minimal customization and technical debt.
  • High availability and resilience of virtual care platforms supporting patient care.
