Kick-start your career with a hands-on apprenticeship designed to help you grow into a skilled Gas Technician. Youll learn through a combination of field training, classroom instruction, and mentorship from experienced utility professionals while gaining valuable experience maintaining essential infrastructure. This role provides a clear pathway for advancement and the opportunity to develop a rewarding career serving the community.

What Youll Do

  • Learn from experienced utility professionals through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on field training.
  • Develop the skills needed to safely install, maintain, inspect, and repair natural gas equipment and infrastructure.
  • Gain experience using industry tools, equipment, vehicles, and technology that support daily operations.
  • Assist with identifying and resolving service issues while helping provide safe, reliable natural gas service to customers.
  • Build knowledge of construction practices, system inspections, and regulatory requirements that support utility operations.
  • Complete apprenticeship milestones, safety training, and skill development activities that prepare you for advancement to the Gas Technician - Journey Level.

Minimum Training & Experience

Apprenticeship Program Requirements

Must complete the apprenticeship and successfully pass all required skills assessments, physical abilities testing, and safety certifications.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's Permit (CDP) is required at the time of hire and must obtain a Valid Class A CDL within 6 months of hire for continued employment, including registration with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Willingness and availability to respond to emergency outages, including evenings, weekends, and extended shifts during storm or emergency events.
  • Commitment to completing all required safety and technical training in the apprenticeship program.

Necessary Special Requirements

  • Classified as essential personnel during storms and emergencies; may be required to work extended hours (up to 16 hours per day) and remain away from home for certain periods.
  • Must be available for on-call duty and may work outside the normal schedule when operational needs arise.
  • May be deployed for mutual-aid assignments out of town, which can involve travel, long workdays, and extended shifts.
  • Must successfully complete the City of Tallahassee Electric & Gas Utility pre-employment screening and assessment program.
  • Apprentices must meet progression requirements to remain in the program - and we're committed to helping you get there.

Salary Range

The Electric & Gas Utility's State Certified Apprenticeship Program uses an in-house training approach to progress employees either every six months or one year depending on the step. Apprentices will receive the required on the job and computer-based training while at work and must progress at the specified timeframes to maintain employment.
