Job Summary
A Gas Apprentice Pipe Fitter (GAPF) is required to interpret work orders, requisition materials, complete forms, and perform all Operation Qualification (OQ) and non-OQ tasks, responsibilities, and duties of the department section(s) he or she is assigned under the direct supervision of the Field Operations Supervisor, Lead Foreman and/or assigned Foreman. Until a GAPF has been trained to the satisfaction of his or her supervisor and met all OQ requirements for the task he or she is performing on a gas pipeline, a GAPF may only perform OQ-required tasks in the presence of the foreman, Field Operation Supervisor, or other Operator Qualified Journeyman as assigned. During his or her four-year apprenticeship a GAPF is never to perform any OQ task unsupervised until he or she has been directed by his or her supervisor to do so, and has successfully completed the OQ training for that task to be qualified to perform natural gas tasks as required by the department's approved OQ plan and Office Pipeline Safety of PHMSA (Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration) Code of Federal Register (CFR) 49 Part §192.801-809, Qualification of Pipeline Personnel, Subpart N.

Supervision:
The Gas Apprentice Pipe Fitter must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this job under the direct supervision of the Field Operations Supervisor, Lead Foreman, and/or assigned Foreman. Decisions that affect the maintenance and/or operation of the gas pipeline are never to be made by the GAPF.
Physical Demands (with or without accommodations):
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. A GAPF must be able to bend, stoop, lift up to 50 pounds, and enter and exit underground facilities. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
Equipment/Tools Used:
Various equipment associated with the installation, maintenance, and testing of natural gas lines, which may include, but are not limited to: hand tools, trenchers, testing instrumentation, backhoes, crimping tools, fusion machines, welders, computers, boring machines, cutting tools, etc.
Additional Note:
The Gas Apprentice Pipe Fitter position is intended to be a four-year program of on-the-job training. At the end of four years, the GAPF moves to the Gas Journeyman position after the Field Operation Supervisor has recommended to the Manager that the GAPF has satisfactorily completed his or her apprenticeship.
