Job Description:

The Research Foundation for SUNY at Oneonta invites applications for the position of Aquatic Invasive Species Steward for the NYSDEC Catskill Watershed Steward Program (CWSP) from Memorial Day to Labor Day, possibly longer. This position will work with the Catskill Regional Invasive Species Partnership's (CRISP) Invasive Species Program and the public to identify and thwart aquatic invasive species (AIS) from introduction into the Catskill Region as well as AIS exports from the region.

From May (Memorial Day) to September (Labor Day), employees in this role will work up to 40 hours each work week, flexible hours. SUNY students cannot work full time until May 17th. September to Columbus Day, the work is part-time. The hours may include early mornings and will include weekends.

Employment opportunities exist in Sullivan, Otsego, & Delaware counties, and parts of Schoharie, Greene, and Orange counties.

Duties include but not limited to:
  • Attend training(s)
  • Greet arriving and departing site users
  • Request their assistance in inspecting for AIS upon arrival and their participation with the removal of AIS and water prior to leaving the access site
  • Record and upload data collections daily
  • Remove debris from launch areas
  • Provide effective AIS awareness and spread prevention messaging
  • Identify operational or procedural concerns and improvements
  • Maintain equipment
    • Including washing uniforms and towels
  • Traveling to designated work sites (no more than 60 minutes of travel)
This position has a designated uniform: t-shirt, vest, Muted/neutral, long trousers, sturdy close toe shoe, and raincoat when appropriate; shirt, vest, and raincoat are provided.

Salary:

New stewards
  • $19.00/hour May - July
  • $19.50/hour August, based on merit
Returning stewards
  • $19.00 - $20.20/hour
  • $19.50 - $20.70/hour August, based on merit
*Stewards working in Sullivan County, or willing to travel to Sullivan County, will receive $2/hour more throughout the season. Returning employees' starting salary is typically based on the rate earned in 2025 or $2/hour more for work in Sullivan County.

Requirements:

Required qualifications
  • Two-years of college education in a natural-resource or education field (e.g., environmental sciences, environmental education, interpretation, education, natural resources policy, natural resources, management, water resources, forestry, field biology, or fisheries)
OR
  • Previous experience as a boat steward
  • General understanding of lakes/rivers, boats, & trailers.
  • Ability to complete training(s)
  • work outside for entire shift.
  • Possesses, maintains, and monitors cell phone and email.
