AQUATICS OPERATIONS COORDINATOR (PARKS & RECREATION)

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for assisting with the planning and management of all aspects of aquatic operations for both programming and facility operations.

MAJOR DUTIES

• Oversees the daily operations of all aquatic facilities, ensuring safe, efficient, and customer-focused service delivery in accordance with department policies and industry standards.
• Plans, coordinates, and implements aquatic programs, including swim lessons, fitness classes, recreational swim, special events, and seasonal programming.
• Coordinates with maintenance and facility staff regarding pool operations, closures, repairs, and preventative maintenance schedules.
• Assists with the development and implementation of new aquatic programs and initiatives to meet community needs and increase participation.
• Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal health and safety regulations, including water quality testing, chemical handling, recordkeeping, and facility inspections.
• Develops and enforces risk management and emergency action plans, conducts safety audits, investigates incidents, and completes accident and incident reports.
• Coordinates aquatic facility rentals and special use permits, including scheduling, fee collection, customer communication, and enforcement of rental policies.
• Recruits, interviews, hires, trains, schedules, and evaluates seasonal and part-time aquatics staff, including lifeguards, swim instructors, and facility attendants
• Provides staff training and certification, including teaching and certifying American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED, first aid, and other required safety credentials.
• Performs administrative and recordkeeping duties, including preparing program reports, participation statistics, staff schedules, payroll documentation, incident reports, and project status updates.
• Recommends the purchase of supplies, equipment, and materials necessary for aquatic programs and facility operations; monitors inventory and assists with budget planning and cost control.
• Provides customer service support, addressing participant inquiries, complaints, and feedback related to aquatic facilities and programming.
• Serves as sponsor and primary point of contact for youth athletic teams and athletes competing at Georgia Recreational/Parks Association (GRPA) aquatics events, including required travel and onsite supervision at competitions.
• Manages concession operations for aquatics facilities, including purchasing food and supplies, maintaining inventory, overseeing daily sales operations, and ensuring health department compliance.
• Supports marketing and outreach efforts by assisting with program promotion, registration materials, and seasonal communications.
• Performs other duties as assigned in support of the Parks and Recreation Department.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Athletics & Aquatics Manager assigns work based on general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines include Health Department/OSHA guidelines and regulations; American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid & AED standards and guidelines; Department of Labor standards and regulations; the Americans with Disabilities Act; Certified Pool Operator guidelines and standards; and related city, state, and/or federal mandates or guidelines. These guidelines require judgement, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

• The work consists of various management, supervisory, and planning duties. Competing priorities and a wide spectrum of responsibilities to manage for unrelated areas contribute to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to plan and manage all aspects of aquatic operations for both programming and facility operations. Success in this position contributes to the availability of opportunities for residents of all ages the ability to participate in classes, programs, and events.

• Contacts are typically with department employees, Athletics & Aquatics Manager, Parks Maintenance, youth league organizations, Community Center staff, Event Coordinator, Program staff, outside vendors, Finance Department, Human Resources, and members of the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, distinguishes between shades of color, utilizes a sense of smell, and swims competently to complete life-saving techniques.
• The work is typically performed in an office, in a noisy place, or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals; machinery with moving parts; and dust, dirt, and grease. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

• This position has functional supervision over assigned personnel within an area, department, or unit. Functional supervision typically involves the ability to assign, coordinate, and review the quality and quantity of work of other employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field required; and
• More than three years of related experience required; or
• Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
• Possession of the American Red Cross Lifeguard. Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Instructor certifications. Lifeguard Instructor Trainer certification preferred.
• Current Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and/or Aquatics Facility Operator (AFO) certification required.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Must successfully pass criminal background, credit, and motor vehicle check.
• Must pass post-offer drug screening.
