Job Description

Instructor aides are responsible for assisting Water Safety Instructors with teaching American Red Cross lessons according to established guidelines, as well as communicating with parents and always ensuring swimmers' safety. Responsible for the assistance of operation and administration of swim lessons with a direct report to the full-time Aquatic Facilities Supervisors. Applicants with American Red Cross WSI certifications should apply to the Aquatics Swim Instructor - Certified position.

Work Hours & Location:

The average weekly is approximately 6-12 hours per week. This position involves a combination of mornings, evenings, and weekends and requires flexibility to provide facility program coverage. This position may be required to work at other City of Raleigh Aquatic facilities as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the creation of lesson plans using the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim curriculum
  • Assist in evaluations of lesson participants at the end of each session
  • Assist in completing course records and submit to program coordinator in a timely fashion
  • Teach associated skills correctly to the corresponding class participants
  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness of facility and swim lesson equipment
  • Maintain a safe learning environment for participants
  • Know and enforce all policies and procedures for aquatic facilities
  • Exhibit friendliness, diplomacy, and tact in responding to customers
  • Maintain confidentiality and exhibit professional conduct when handling sensitive information
  • Responsible for attending all scheduled shifts
  • Must attend all scheduled staff trainings to gain and/or share pertinent information
  • Demonstrate time management skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrate initiative; Understand and respond to the various needs of customers and staff

Typical Qualifications

  • 3 months of swimming experience, lesson instruction, or other relevant teaching experience
  • Experience interacting directly with customers
  • Must be proficient in the following skills: Front Crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary back stroke, side stroke, butterfly, back float/ sculling, and treading water.

Visual Acuity:

Working Conditions:

The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions. Subject to extreme heat and high noise level.
