NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the National Park Service (NPS). These experienced professionals provide administrative expertise, facilities management, natural and cultural resource planning, and a broad array of other professional skills that support the National Park Service through the Experienced Services Program (ESP).
Positions listed here do not guarantee employment for any definite period. Enrollment in the Experienced Worker Programs administered by NEW Solutions is temporary. The enrollment relationship between NEW Solutions and the Enrollee is an ?at-will? relationship. This means that an Enrollee is free to terminate enrollment at any time during the enrollment period, and NEW Solutions and the Agency have the right to terminate the relationship with the Enrollee.

This position is funded for up to 2061 total hours.
Qualifications:
MA/MS Degree in Graduate degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline. Degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: 1.) History of archeology, Archeology of a major geographical area, 2.) Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development, 3. Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques. 4.) Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. AND Six semester hours of related course work in: 1.) geography, geology, or cultural geography; 2.) history, historiography, or historical archeology; 3.) environmental studies; 4.) scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); 5.) and/or surveying with minimum additional experience of 1 year(s)
- Archaeologist must meet the Secretary of the Interior?s Professional Qualification Standards. Must have knowledge and proficiency in the use of ArcGIS Pro and be familiar with the ArcGIS Online environment (including Survey123 and/or the Field Maps app). Knowledge of NPS planning and management requirements and guidelines. A knowledge of the cultural resources common to the American southwest, together with a broad, well-rounded knowledge of North American (or other relevant area) prehistory and a specialized understanding of the specific prehistoric and historic cultures and themes which are significant to the park and its archeological resources.

Duties:
The employee will serve on several projects to support archaeological monitoring in Big Bend National Park. Projects include, but are not limited to, updating the parks archaeological GIS database and park wide compliance maps, performing annual cultural resource site assessment, re-establishing field maps as a survey tool for site assessments, update park?s CRIS database, assist with determination of eligibility for various properties and monitoring parks construction projects as needed.
- Supports and makes contributions to the resources management plan, interpretive prospectus, and spin-off documents such as specific plans, action plans, revisions, and fiscal and budget documents. 15%
- Serves as an advisor to park management on cultural resources. Identifies, evaluates, and monitors cultural resources, identifies potential threats, and makes recommendations to managementregarding status and mitigation of impacts (present and future). 25%
- Develops and maintains liaisons and effective working relations with related groups and individuals, agencies, and the public. Attends management and professional conferences and other events for thepurposes of exchanging information and advancing advocacy for park stewardship. 10%
- Coordinates park cultural resources strategies and programs with those on adjacent lands for the purposes of achieving broad protection strategies and minimizing human impacts. 10%
- Determines research needs and coordinates efforts toward obtaining research through various programs, grants, and contracts. Reviews archeological research project proposals, scopes of work, and task directives prepared for planning and other management purposes, including resources management plans. 10%
- Plans and conducts archeological research for planning documents, including general management plans, resources management plans, environmental impact statements, environmental assessments,archeological overviews and assessments, and archeological field investigations of all types, as required to meet the needs of the park. 10%
- Incorporates appropriate GIS technology into job to provide comprehensive and scientifically sound answers to inquiries from managers and others. Uses automatic methods of data collection,analysis or illustration. Inputs data into digital form and uses computer applications for data analysis, manipulation, and presentation. 20%
Other:
- Overnight travel: Yes, may be up to 1 week. Frequency would be low. Travel may be for accessing backcountry sites in the park or on the river.
- Health and Safety Considerations: Safety Training will be performed by supervisor through job hazard analysis.
- Required Safety Gear: Safety equipment may need to be used such as PPE (safety glasses, hard hat, gloves etc.) for certain surveys or site visits to active construction of historical buildings. This PPE will be provided by the park and outlined in job hazard analysis.
- Physical requirements: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work are sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.
