Job Title: Architectural Designer / Job Captain
Job Description
This role offers an opportunity for an experienced Architectural Designer / Job Captain to support complex commercial, institutional, healthcare, and mission-critical projects. You will play a key role in the development and coordination of construction documents, project delivery, and multidisciplinary collaboration across all phases of design and documentation. The position emphasizes advanced Revit-based technical production, coordination with consultants and project teams, and mentoring junior staff while contributing to high-profile, large-scale building projects.
Responsibilities
- Develop, modify, and coordinate detailed architectural drawings and comprehensive construction document sets in Revit.
- Support projects through all phases, including schematic design, design development, construction documents, permitting, and construction administration.
- Coordinate the architectural scope with structural, MEP, interior design, medical planning, and other consultant teams to ensure fully integrated solutions.
- Prepare technical details, plans, elevations, sections, schedules, and specifications that align with project requirements and quality standards.
- Participate in project meetings, site visits, field investigations, and construction coordination activities to support successful project delivery.
- Assist with quality control reviews to ensure accuracy, completeness, and code compliance of drawings and documentation.
- Mentor and oversee junior team members, reviewing their work and providing technical guidance and feedback.
- Collaborate closely with senior project architects, project managers, and design leaders to meet project goals, schedules, and client expectations.
- Support project presentations, coordination efforts, and client communications, including management of clients, consultants, and overall project workflows.
- Contribute to core and shell building documentation, healthcare fit-outs, interior renovations, and other complex project types as assigned.
- Maintain strong organization of project files, documentation, and Revit models to support efficient production and coordination.
- Apply a solid understanding of building codes, ADA requirements, and industry standards throughout the design and documentation process.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture or a closely related field.
- 5+ years of professional experience in an architecture or design firm, with 6-12 years of experience strongly preferred.
- Advanced proficiency in Revit, including production and coordination of complex construction document sets.
- Demonstrated experience in technical production and documentation, with approximately 75% of the role focused on these tasks.
- Strong understanding of building systems, construction detailing, and coordination with consultants.
- Experience in core and shell or healthcare projects, including fit-outs and interior renovations.
- Background working on complex commercial, healthcare, institutional, mission-critical, or large-scale building projects.
- Knowledge of applicable building codes, ADA requirements, and relevant industry standards.
- Ability to manage clients, consultants, and overall project coordination responsibilities.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills, with a client-facing demeanor.
- Eligibility to work in the United States.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Master's degree in Architecture, Interior Design, or a related field is beneficial.
- Professional architectural licensure is preferred but not required.
- Experience with architectural design, construction drawings, and construction documentation for large, complex projects.
- Exposure to healthcare-focused projects and commercial building types in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Experience with schematic design, design development, and construction administration using Revit.
- Demonstrated ability to lead small teams, mentor junior staff, and contribute to approximately 15% of the role focused on team leadership and coordination.
- Comfort managing client, consultant, and project team communication, representing about 10% of the role.
- Ability to collaborate across multiple offices and work effectively within a highly collaborative studio culture.
- Interest in professional growth, including licensure and continued technical development, with support for licensing costs available.
Work Environment
The work environment is highly collaborative, leveraging multiple offices to staff and deliver a diverse portfolio of healthcare and commercial projects, including large-scale and technically complex developments. The team uses Revit as the primary production and coordination tool, along with other standard design and documentation technologies. The schedule follows a flexible hybrid model, typically with three days in the office and remote work on other days; during the first 30 days, employees are generally in the office at least four days per week to become acclimated to the firm, its processes, and project teams. The culture emphasizes teamwork, open communication, and cross-office collaboration, with project teams regularly coordinating across locations such as New York City, Washington, DC, and Richmond, VA. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $48.00/hr.
