For over 90 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware has impacted thousands of lives across Delaware. We are the largest licensed provider of childcare in Delaware and the only statewide Boys & Girls Club in the nation.
Each and everyday girls and boys are left to find their own recreation and companionship. An increasing number of kids are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know they have a place in their community where they can go. Clubs provide a safe haven for youth, allow them to meet with friends and be a part of positive peer groups. Club programs teach life skills, conflict resolution and focus on the development of character. Clubs also provide members with positive role models and a nurturing environment that help improve decision-making skills. Position Summary The Area Director is responsible for providing senior level leadership and direction for a designated group of Clubs. This position must embrace diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and carry out behaviors aligned with our mission and DEI statement. The Area Director supervises Club Directors and provides strategic leadership to a designated geographic area. Core Competencies needed for this role: leadership development, resource development, board development, risk management, fiscal management, resource management, performance management, community relationship development, influence and emotional intelligence. Essential Functions: - Provide senior level leadership and strategic direction for the successful operation of a group of Clubs in a designated geographic region.
- Supporting Club Directors to ensure high standards of excellence in the delivery of the Club’s various programs and services, including but not limited to:
- State licensed school-age childcare & preschool
- Sports and recreation
- Educational programs
- The Arts
- Health and Wellness
- Character and Leadership
- Support Club culture, focusing on positive youth development, trauma-informed practices, and social and emotional learning
- Plan collaboratively with other area directors to support efficiencies and effective budgeting, staffing, and resource acquisition; collaborate with Impact Program Team to ensure effective delivery of services to teens; Develop strategies and systems that provide collaboration, efficiencies, and overall effectiveness of programs provided by designated Clubs
- Collaborate with other Area Directors and the Vice President of Club Services and Program Strategy & Implementation on planning and operations leadership across the organization
- Provide leadership development for Club Directors, ensuring their continuous growth and development i.e., promote internal and external trainings, promote self-empowerment for career development, promote self-learning
- Effectively deliver the performance management process by providing employees observations and feedback. Must be able to have the hard conversation in a caring respectful, manner
- Drive Club safety and security planning and ensure compliance with Office of Childcare Licensing regulations, purchase of care, and other affiliated and regulatory agencies; provide leadership in emergency situations.
- Develop strategic alliances and collaborative partnerships to enhance program effectiveness and strengthen the presence of the Club in the community.
- Take specific steps to ensure organization’s Program Quality Assessment & Improvement Process is implemented
- Collaborate with senior leadership to ensure execution on metrics for effective operations, systems for reporting, and utilizing data to improve outcomes
- Using the “Board Development Cycle” or similar guidelines, and in consultation with the Chief of Staff, Vice President of Development and Regional Development Director, to recruit and develop new board members, as well as encourage and support effective board functions.
- Manage financial resources, including (but not limited to) budget and financial statement analysis, budget preparation, balancing income and expenses, controlling expenditures against a budget, and adhering to financial management policies and procedures; manage Club assets i.e., facilities, vehicles, supplies, and equipment.
- While using a regionalized approach, ensure execution of efficient and effective administrative and operational systems to drive organizational outcomes
- Contribute to positive brand image of BGCDE and the organization’s drive to be the leading youth-serving organization in communities; collaborate with various community partners to include: school officials and leaders of community-based organizations
- Participate as needed in the organization’s strategic planning process and support the Unit/Area Board in setting and achieving its goals, annually assessing its performance, and following established Unit Board guidelines.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements: - Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices related to youth development, strategic planning, board development, resource development and management, community relationship development, fiscal management, and human resource management and development.
- Four-year degree from an accredited college or university preferred or the equivalent years of experience.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in management, administration and operation, preferably at a Boys & Girls Club or other nonprofit organizations.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel throughout the designated region and occasionally, in other parts of the state; must have less than 5 points on DMV record and be willing to drive company vehicles (e.g. 10-passenger van).
- Must be able to pass background check and necessary clearances
Environmental and Working Conditions: Environmental and working conditions vary from indoors to outdoors; various meeting locations in and out of the Club; occasional statewide travel (e.g. training). Employees are subject to transfer from one department to another and from one Club/School Site to another as the needs of the organization change. Physical and Mental Requirements: - Maintain a high energy level.
- Frequently lift, carry or otherwise move and position objects weighing up to 25 pounds when preparing rooms for activities.
- Typically bend, stoop, walk and sometimes run while interacting with children in various activities throughout the day.
- Ability to perform duties effectively under stressful conditions; ability to make decisions quickly and accurately with tact and impartiality
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Work Hours: Monday –Friday; hours vary based on needs of Clubs, may require night and weekend work, flexibility is required FT Employee Benefits Incentives
