Position location: This role can be based out of any of our area offices or landfills in Wisconsin or Minnesota.

I. Job Summary

In partnership with Group and Area leadership, responsible for delivering industry leading performance across landfill heavy equipment operations and transfer station logistics in the market area. This role supports both the maintenance strategy and utilization of landfill heavy equipment, as well as the logistical oversight of transfer station operations to optimize asset utilization, equipment availability, and overall market efficiency.

Responsible for delivering excellence in cost, equipment availability, asset utilization, and operational performance through data-driven decision making. Works with Group and Area Leadership to implement WM Fleet Strategy, support transfer station optimization, and execute standard processes that improve performance across the market area.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prioritize and communicate replacement and rebuild capital needs for landfill heavy equipment assets across the Market Area.
  • Ensure safe and reliable heavy equipment is available to support landfill and transfer station operational requirements, while optimizing asset utilization to meet production demands.
  • Provide logistical oversight of transfer station operations, including equipment usage, compactor performance, and internal material flow to maximize efficiency and throughput.
  • Partner with landfill and transfer station operations teams to improve productivity, reduce inefficiencies, and optimize both equipment performance and site operations.
  • Utilize data, scorecards, and performance metrics to monitor performance, identify trends, and drive continuous improvement across heavy equipment and transfer station operations.
  • Implement maintenance and operational plans that align with business priorities, focusing on cost control, ROI, and overall performance improvement.
  • Execute corporate strategies, policies, and standard processes to ensure consistency, compliance, and operational effectiveness across sites.
  • Collaborate with maintenance managers and cross-functional teams to drive performance, providing guidance and support while leading primarily through influence.
  • Conduct fleet and operational evaluations to ensure maintenance standards are met and opportunities for improvement are identified.
  • Ensure maintenance shops are appropriately staffed and equipped, supporting training, development, and overall team effectiveness.
  • Support adherence to WM''s Mission to Zero standards and regulatory requirements across all operations.
  • Assist in budget and capital planning activities, including forecasting equipment needs and supporting long-term investment decisions.
  • Maintain visibility across Business Unit maintenance and transfer station activities within the Market Area.
  • Travel throughout Market Area (approximately 50%) to support landfill and transfer station locations.
  • Approach all encounters with employees, customers, and vendors in a professional, service-oriented manner.
  • Other special projects and tasks as assigned.

III. Qualifications

A. Required Qualifications

  • Technical School Degree; or
  • Bachelor''s Degree from a four-year college or university
  • 3 years of relevant experience in operations, logistics, fleet, or heavy equipment environments
  • Valid Driver''s License

B. Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to heavy equipment operations or maintenance (landfill equipment preferred, but not required to be highly technical)
  • Experience in logistics, transportation, or transfer station operations
  • Experience in waste industry, construction, aggregates, or similar asset-heavy environments
  • Leadership experience in an operations setting

Pay: The expected salary range for this hybrid position is $95,000 - $140,000 per year. This represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate's relevant experience, education, training, certifications, qualifications, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for incentive pay.
