    ABOUT THE ROLE
    The Area Safety Manager leads safety strategy and execution across multiple commercial construction projects within a regional area. This role partners closely with project leadership and field teams to execute on Valley’s strong safety culture and drive consistent safety performance across job sites.
     
    This traveling safety manager will be based out of Indianapolis with the availability to travel frequently where the work demands. Travel requirements will consist primarily of day trips. However, overnight stays may be required 1-2 times per month for specific job sites and circumstances. Candidates should be independent self-starters with experience in project start-up.
     
    WHAT YOU’LL DO
    • Lead safety programs across multiple commercial construction projects. 
    • Conduct regular job site audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify hazards and improve safe work practices. 
    • Partner with site managers, superintendents, and field leaders to implement proactive safety plans. 
    • Support preconstruction and project startup by reviewing site-specific safety requirements and risk exposures. 
    • Investigate incidents and safety concerns, root causes, and corrective actions.
    • Track safety metrics, trends, and compliance activities, and communicate findings to leadership. 
    • Deliver safety training, toolbox talks, coaching, and onboarding to field employees.
    • Ensure alignment with OSHA regulations, company policies, and customer-specific safety requirements. 
    • Promote accountability and engagement at all levels to strengthen a culture of prevention and continuous improvement. 
    • Maintain required documentation, reports, and records related to inspections, training, incidents, and corrective actions. 
    • Support return-to-work coordination and follow-up practices as needed in partnership with HR and operations. 
    • Travel regularly between job sites within the assigned area.
    WHO YOU ARE
    • 3+ years of safety leadership experience in commercial construction. 
    • Strong knowledge of OSHA standards, construction safety practices, hazard recognition, and incident investigation. 
    • Strong communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills. 
    • Ability to collaborate with field leaders.
    • Strong organizational skills and ability.
    • Proficiency with safety documentation, reporting, and Microsoft Office or similar systems.
    Strongly Preferred Qualifications 
    • CHST or similar safety credential. 
    • Experience with large-scale commercial, healthcare, education, industrial, or mixed-use construction projects. 
    • Experience leading behavioral safety initiatives or culture-building efforts. 
    • Bilingual (English/Spanish) 
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    The physical requirements are those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations:
    • The physical demands of this position require the ability to communicate orally and in writing, hear at a conversational level, use both hands, distinguish depth, and operate a motor vehicle. 
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will frequently (34-66% time on job) will be required to stand, walk, grip with pressure, and twist or bend wrists. Occasionally (6-33% time on job) the employee will be required to sit, use fingers.  Infrequently (2-5% time on job) the employee may be required to climb up to 5 flights of stairs, carry 10 lbs. up to 10 ft., and keep wrists and feet in prolonged positions of flexion or extension. Rarely (1% time on the job or less) the employee will be required to stoop, balance, kneel, crawl, reach, repeatedly bend, perform hand over hand pulling, twist while rotating the torso, climb ladders up to 6 ft., pull 5 lbs. up to 5 ft., push 10 lbs. up to 10 ft., lift up to 35 lbs., and use hand and foot controls.
