ARMED SECURITY CONSTABLE

SC-PAY GRADE 8

DUTIES AND FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The incumbent is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment and may be called upon to deploy varying levels of intervention to ensure the safety and security of Sussex County Government's buildings, grounds, visitors, and employees. This position also serves as a first responder in cases of emergency. This position is considered essential and may be subject to emergency call-in to include nights and weekends.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Performs continuous access control duties, including screening visitors and personnel using walk-through magnetometers and hand-held detection wands; provides professional and courteous service while enforcing security protocols for all personnel and visitors; conducts scheduled rounds of facility (interior and exterior) in accordance with established routes, schedules and procedures; performs facility checks to include inspection of doors, windows, and gate checks to determine they are secure; monitors security cameras and ensures the overall security and integrity of Sussex County Government offices; observes departing personnel to guard against thefts of property; reports irregularities and potentially hazardous conditions and items in need of repair; responsible for the care and control of radios, keys, access cards, and other equipment assigned; responds promptly and appropriately to all security incidents, emergencies, and alarms according to established emergency response plans; accurately and thoroughly documents all activities, incidents, and security breaches with applicable documentation; taking immediate and appropriate action to confront and engage an active assailant when necessary to protect the public, employees, and visitors, consistent with their training, legal authority, and departmental policies; performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Ability to work with little supervision and carry out assigned duties in a responsible, honest manner; ability to make decisions independently and be self-directed; ability to handle typical and crisis situations efficiently and effectively; ability to achieve First-Aid, CPR and AED certifications; ability to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally and some light work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force constantly; ability to walk, climb and descend up to three (3) complete flights of stairs; ability to document and generate accurate incident reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives from other agencies, staff, department heads, elected officials and the general public; strong problem-solving skills with high attention to detail; ability to prioritize tasks; ability to perform simple mathematical calculations; must be able to physically stand, climb stairs, walk or patrol the majority of their shift.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum High School Diploma or GED; at least twenty-one (21) years of age; three - five (3-5) years security experience or past active law enforcement and/or military experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; ability to meet and maintain requirements for being certified as an armed Constable (State of Delaware) as established by Delaware Code Chapter 27, and Section 2705 and other related sections or must enroll and successfully pass the next training offering; successful completion of physical exam and either an MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) or a PAI (Personal Assessment Inventory) evaluation; successful completion and recertification of Delaware required firearms, handcuff, and ASP (baton) usage requirements; excellent customer service and organizational skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills; proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).

  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends occasionally
