Job Summary:

Elgin Community College seeks adjunct instructors to teach Saturday 3D studio art courses in ceramics. Courses eligible for assignment include sections of ART-105 Ceramics I and ART-106 Ceramics II. The ideal candidate will have a Master of Fine Arts degree in ceramics or a master's degree in another 3D arts discipline (e.g. sculpture, digital fabrication, metalsmithing) with at least 18 graduate hours in ceramic arts. Demonstrated evidence of professional practice experience inclusive of exhibition record, residencies, portfolios or other professional work will be considered. History of college-level teaching experience within ceramics or 3D art discipline is strongly preferred.

The successful candidate is expected to 1) design lessons/units that promote critical thinking through student-content and student-to-student learning activities, 2) foster a supportive learning environment for students by employing evidence-based instructional strategies, and 3) demonstrate commitment to student learning and teaching effectiveness.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Master of Fine Arts degree in ceramics; or a master's degree in related 3D art discipline with at least 18 graduate hours in ceramics; or combination of education and experience may be considered

  2. College teaching experience preferred

  3. Commitment to the community college mission and philosophy

  4. Commitment to meeting the academic needs of non-traditional students, including first generation students, older students, minority/multicultural students, and non-native speakers of English.

Essential Duties:

Deliver Instruction

  1. Conduct assigned classes and/or labs

  2. Prepare lessons

  3. Provide course syllabus (which shall include grading standards, attendance policies, classroom behavioral expectations, course outline and contact information)

  4. Verify student enrollment and submit grade sheets

If a lab is involved:

  1. Prepare labs

  2. Enforce lab safety procedures

Evaluate Student Progress

  1. Keep accurate record of student performance

  2. Provide students with timely feedback

Provide Student Assistance

  1. Maintain office hours and voicemail/e-mail communication

  2. Refer students to student support services

  3. Accommodate special needs students
