The Art and Design Ceramics Operations Technician provides technical and operational support for ceramics studio facilities in collaboration with the Art and Design Program Director, faculty, and staff. This position helps maintain a safe, organized, and functional studio environment and supports instruction through equipment maintenance, kiln operations, materials preparation, and training of student employees and studio/lab assistants. This position may also assist with Art and Design administrative tasks and outreach events ad hoc.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor and supervise students during ceramics open lab times as needed.
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safe working conditions in ceramics studio and kiln areas.
- Prepare, set up, and maintain studio spaces, equipment, and materials for instructional use.
- Load, fire, and unload kilns in accordance with established procedures and safety guidelines.
- Monitor kiln performance and studio equipment; perform basic maintenance and report repair needs.
- Prepare and maintain clay, glazes, and other materials, including mixing, testing, and recycling clay as needed.
- Assist faculty and students with the safe and effective use of ceramics equipment, tools, and materials.
- Provide training and guidance to lab assistants and student workers on studio procedures and safety practices.
- Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ensure proper use and availability of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Monitor inventory of supplies and materials; communicate needs for replenishment.
- Collaborate and communicate with faculty and program leadership regarding studio operations, safety, and support needs.
- Assist FAC administrative assistant, faculty, and staff with other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of ceramics studio processes, including kiln firing and materials handling.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain ceramics equipment, including kilns and related tools.
- Ability to have a flexible schedule to accommodate unpredictable disciplinary needs. Often requires weekends and evening shifts, particularly towards the end of each term.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently within established guidelines
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse background
- Ability to provide clear instruction and training in a supportive and collaborative manner.

- Ability to use software programs and database systems which include Microsoft Office Suite, email, website editing, basic desktop publishing, and modern office equipment.
Ergonomic Requirements
Regular office hours are established between 8 am - 5 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities.
Incumbent must be able to function effectively in indoor and outdoor ceramics studio environments engaged in active, hands-on work. Requires standing, walking, bending, and working with materials and equipment for extended periods. Requires to write, read written materials and computer screens, and ability to use telephonic conversations. Work may involve lifting and moving materials and equipment, including clay, kiln shelves, and carts (up to 75 lbs.). Requires use of personal protective equipment and the ability to work in environments with dust, heat, and ceramics materials. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
