    General Purpose

    Connect patients, visitors, and staff at the University of Vermont Medical Center and Golisano Children's Hospital to the arts.

    Develop Skills in these areas:

    • Using the arts to help people feel more creative, comforted, and connected through a wide range of arts interventions and strategies.
    • Build communication skills and rapport with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, ages, and abilities, developing sensitivity to individual and cultural differences.
    • Understanding the medical clinical environment and how to professionally work within it.
    • Supporting greater empathy and connection among participants and in one's self.

    Pay Grade: Unpaid in lieu of academic credit

    Remote Tier 1: Zero (0) days remote/week

    Please note this position is unpaid. If you are associating this unpaid experience with course credit, the City of Burlington requires a Memorandum of Understanding to be signed in advance of your start date.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Plan and implement arts experiences for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities at the UVM Medical Center and Golisano Children's Hospital helping to create a welcoming and encouraging environment for creativity and communication.
    • Provide guidance and support to people creating art projects as part of the program, and develop connections with participants on a wide range of art forms.
    • Create and maintain supplies necessary for the program ensuring that materials are ready and available for participants.
    • Help maintain the organization and hygiene of program supplies.
    • Follow all hospital procedures as trained, especially in regard to HIPAA and patient privacy, and sanitization and hygiene for all materials and personal hygiene.
    • Liaise with UVMMC and GCH nursing, child life, and volunteer services on a regular basis.
    • Track work in the program through logging data on visits and writing a daily brief narrative on meaningful interactions.
    • Attend meetings with volunteers to develop skills.
    • Grow into a leadership role, eventually leading group meetings.
    • Help train and coach volunteers.
    • Communicate professionally about schedules, keeping the shared calendar, partners, and program leader up to date.
    • Follow up on patient visit requests, communicating with the team on various channels to ensure support for participants.

    Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

    • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development and ability to view all aspects of work through a culturally competent lens is required.
    • At least 17 years old.
    • Interested in the arts (you do not have to be skilled, but you do need interest and appreciation for the arts).
    • Able to wear a face mask for the duration of the time on site.
    • Ability to work on-site at UVM Medical Center and Golisano Children's Hospital.
    • Ability to clear a hospital background check and health screening for TB.
    • Ability to follow all HIPAA patient privacy rules.
