Shepherd School District has an opening for a Middle School Art Teacher for the 2025-2026 school year.

The Shepherd School District is a Class B school in southeastern Montana. Shepherd School District is comprised of two separate school districts; a PreK-8th grade Elementary district, and a 9-12th grade High School district. There

are a total of about 800 students attending school in grades PreK-12 on one campus.

Shepherd Public School is the heart of the community. It is a small community located just outside of one of Montana's largest cities, Billings. Most activities in the community happen within and around the school as the focal point.

The applicant must possess or be in the process of obtaining a valid State of Montana teaching certificate with appropriate endorsements. Applicants need to confer with students, parents or guardians, and other staff, openly and positively to provide guidance, evaluation, and encouragement of student achievement as well as know current curriculum and instructional practices. They also need to establish classroom goals and objectives, evaluate and record student progress; collect and interpret a variety of data prepare reports for parents/guardians or for administrative purposes.

Salary Information

First-year teacher salary is $37,457 for a Bachelor's degree and $42,536 for a Master's degree. Shepherd pays for up to 7 years of experience at a Master's level with 10 extra credits at $51,616. The district provides a Professional Development stipend. 

Work Schedule

Shepherd's teacher work schedule is from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday-Thursday, and 7:30 am to 2:45 pm on Fridays, or as contracted by Shepherd School District. The school year runs from Labor Day to Memorial Day. The applicant will be asked to work extra hours to perform some of the duties that come with being a teacher in a school district. 

Job Description:

Must be a certified Arts teacher 5-12, or a\K-8 Elementary certified teacher with a strong background in Art. Applicant will be teaching 7 periods a day, with one of those periods a prep. Applicant will need to be able to teach grades 6-8 in the area of Art. Knowledge of the current common core standards is a must as you will be teaching these standards. We are a professional learning community, which means you are required to collaborate with your teaching partners to work on student instruction. This is an important part of what we do at Shepherd Middle School. We are looking for a positive/motivated person to join our outstanding staff.

Use necessary and appropriate instructional methods and materials, which are suited to the well-being of the students and to the nature of the learning activities, program and/or curriculum involved; implement established programs or curriculum objectives; attend in-service training; continue to improve professional growth through study and experimentation; remain current in methods and techniques of instruction.

Establish and implement, in a positive and supportive manner, classroom policies and procedures governing student behavior and conduct; provide guidance, counseling, and discipline to encourage students to meet standards of achievement and conduct; make referrals for assistance where appropriate.

Confer with students, parents or guardians, and other staff, in an open and positive manner to provide guidance, evaluation, and encouragement of student achievement.

Establish classroom goals and objectives, in conformance with courses of study specified by State and School District statutes, regulations, and guidelines; evaluate and record student progress; prepare reports for parents or guardians.

Collect and interpret a variety of data; provide reports for administrative purposes.

Direct the activities of assigned non-certificated personnel.

Attend or participate in all required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary by the District and/or building principal, in order to accomplish the objectives of the position and for professional development.

Participate in site-based decision-making processes.

  • Certificated staff work the school year contract with placement on the District and SEA bargaining agreement salary schedule.  Placement on the schedule is determined by training and experience.
