Position Summary

The Art Teacher is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive visual arts instructional program for students at Scott High School. The teacher will provide engaging, standards-based instruction that develops students' artistic skills, creativity, critical thinking, appreciation of the arts, and understanding of artistic processes and techniques.

The Art Teacher will maintain a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment and will work collaboratively with school personnel, families, and the community to promote student achievement and participation in the visual arts.

Required Qualifications

• Must hold a valid West Virginia Department of Education professional teaching certificate with an appropriate endorsement or certification in Art.
• Must meet all certification and employment requirements established by the West Virginia Department of Education, West Virginia law, and the Boone County Board of Education.
• Must successfully complete all required background checks and employment screenings.
• Must demonstrate effective written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Must possess the knowledge and ability to provide standards-based visual arts instruction at the high school level.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Plans and delivers high-quality visual arts instruction aligned with West Virginia College- and Career-Readiness Standards and the approved county curriculum.
• Provides instruction in a variety of artistic media, techniques, processes, and concepts, which may include drawing, painting, design, sculpture, ceramics, crafts, digital art, photography, art history, and other visual art forms.
• Develops lesson plans, instructional materials, activities, projects, and assessments appropriate to students' ages, abilities, interests, and educational needs.
• Promotes creativity, artistic expression, critical thinking, problem-solving, craftsmanship, and an appreciation for the visual arts.
• Provides differentiated instruction and appropriate accommodations and modifications for students with diverse learning needs.
• Establishes and maintains an organized, safe, respectful, and productive classroom environment.
• Instructs students in the safe and appropriate use of art materials, equipment, tools, and supplies.
• Maintains an accurate inventory of art supplies, equipment, instructional materials, and student artwork.
• Ensures that potentially hazardous materials, tools, and equipment are properly labeled, stored, secured, and used in accordance with applicable safety requirements.
• Assesses student performance through projects, portfolios, observations, examinations, critiques, and other appropriate measures.
• Maintains accurate records of student attendance, grades, progress, assignments, and assessment results.
• Provides timely and constructive feedback to students regarding their artistic development and academic performance.
• Communicates regularly and professionally with students, parents, guardians, administrators, counselors, and other school personnel regarding student progress.
• Displays student artwork throughout the school and assists with art exhibits, competitions, showcases, community events, and other school activities as appropriate.
• Encourages students to participate in local, regional, state, and national art programs, exhibitions, contests, and scholarship opportunities.
• Collaborates with other teachers and departments to integrate the visual arts into the broader instructional program when appropriate.
• Participates in faculty meetings, professional development activities, parent conferences, committees, school improvement initiatives, and other required school functions.
• Supervises students during instructional periods and other assigned activities.
• Maintains confidentiality regarding students, employees, and school-related matters.
• Complies with all Boone County Board of Education policies, administrative procedures, employee expectations, and applicable state and federal laws.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the principal, superintendent, or designee.

The Art Teacher shall:

• Demonstrate professional conduct and ethical behavior.
• Maintain appropriate relationships and boundaries with students.
• Work cooperatively with administrators, teachers, service personnel, parents, and community members.
• Participate in ongoing professional learning to strengthen instructional practices and content knowledge.
• Use instructional technology and digital resources when appropriate.
• Support the mission, goals, and improvement priorities of Scott High School and Boone County Schools.
• Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

• Stand, walk, sit, bend, reach, and move throughout the classroom and school building.
• Demonstrate artistic techniques and safely operate art-related tools and equipment.
• Lift, carry, move, and organize art supplies, student projects, equipment, and instructional materials.
• Perform duties involving exposure to paint, clay, adhesives, dust, cleaning materials, and other substances commonly used in visual arts instruction.
• Communicate effectively with students and employees.

Terms of Employment

The position shall be for a 200-day employment term. Salary, benefits, and other conditions of employment shall be established by the Boone County Board of Education in accordance with the applicable professional salary schedule, West Virginia law, and Board policy.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with West Virginia Department of Education requirements, Boone County Board of Education policy, and the district's approved employee evaluation procedures.
