Art Teacher (Grades 5–8)
Location: Cheektowaga Central Middle School Reports To: Building Principal
Position Summary
The Art Teacher for grades 5–8 is responsible for delivering a comprehensive visual arts program that fosters creativity, self-expression, and criticalthinking. The teacher will engage students in a variety of artistic media and techniques while aligning instruction with New York State Education Department learning standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and implement standards-based art instruction for students in grades 5–8
- Teach a wide range of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, and introductory digital art
- Integrate art history, cultural awareness, and interdisciplinary connections into lessons
- Differentiate instruction to support diverse learners, including students with IEPs and English Language Learners
- Assess student learning through projects, portfolios, and ongoing formative assessments
- Maintain a safe, organized, and engaging classroom/studio environment
- Manage inventory and care of art supplies, tools, and equipment
- Display student artwork throughout the school and coordinate art exhibitions or showcases
- Collaborate with colleagues to support cross-curricular initiatives and school-wide goals
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff regarding student progress
- Participate in faculty meetings, committees, and professional development opportunities
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, or related field (Master's preferred)
- Valid New York State Teaching Certification in Art (Grades K–12 or equivalent)
- Knowledge of Visual Arts Education best practices and adolescent development
- Strong classroom management and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching middle school students (grades 5–8)
- Familiarity with digital art tools and technology integration
- Knowledge of culturally responsive teaching practices
- Experience organizing student exhibitions or school art events
Working Conditions
