The Art Teacher is responsible for creating a dynamic and engaging learning environment that fosters creativity, artistic expression, critical thinking, and appreciation of the visual arts. The teacher will provide instruction aligned to Wisconsin Academic Standards for Art and support students in developing artistic skills, techniques, and understanding through a variety of media and experiences. The Art Teacher will contribute to the overall mission of Portage High School by promoting student achievement, creativity, collaboration, and lifelong learning.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Instruction and Curriculum

  • Plan and deliver engaging standards-based lessons in visual arts courses.

  • Develop curriculum aligned with Wisconsin Academic Standards for Art.

  • Teach a variety of artistic techniques, media, and processes including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, digital art, mixed media, printmaking, and design.

  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students.

  • Encourage creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking through artistic exploration.

  • Provide meaningful feedback and assess student growth through portfolios, projects, critiques, and performance-based assessments.

Student Engagement and Learning Environment

  • Establish and maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive classroom and studio environment.

  • Foster a culture of respect, creativity, and collaboration.

  • Promote student ownership of learning and artistic expression.

  • Encourage participation in art exhibitions, contests, community projects, and school events.

  • Support student social-emotional growth through positive relationships and creative opportunities.

Program Development

  • Maintain and organize art supplies, equipment, and instructional materials.

  • Manage classroom budgets and inventory of materials.

  • Display student artwork throughout the school and community.

  • Coordinate student art shows, exhibitions, and showcases.

  • Collaborate with staff to integrate visual arts across disciplines when appropriate.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).

  • Analyze student data and adjust instruction to improve learning outcomes.

  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff regarding student progress.

  • Maintain accurate student records and grades in accordance with district procedures.

  • Participate in required district professional development and staff meetings.

  • Uphold district policies, procedures, and professional ethics.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor''s degree in Art Education or related field.

  • Valid Wisconsin teaching license with appropriate Art certification.

  • Knowledge of Wisconsin Academic Standards for Art.

  • Strong classroom management and communication skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, families, and community members.
