    Role Description The Art Therapy / AMFT internship role at Bay Area Art Therapy is an on-site position located in San Mateo, CA. Interns will support licensed clinicians in providing art-based and talk therapy services, including assisting with client intake, co-facilitating individual and group sessions, and helping design art therapy interventions tailored to client needs. Day-to-day responsibilities include preparing therapeutic materials, maintaining a clean and organized studio environment, documenting sessions under supervision, and participating in case consultations and supervision meetings. Interns may also assist with community outreach, workshop development, and basic administrative tasks related to scheduling and client communication. This internship is designed to build clinical skills, professional confidence, and familiarity with ethical and culturally responsive practice.

    Qualifications

    • Enrollment in or completion of a master’s program in Marriage and Family Therapy, Counseling, Psychology, Art Therapy, or a related field; eligibility for AMFT or equivalent intern status in California preferred.

    • Strong interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills; commitment to non-discriminatory, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care.

    • Ability to maintain client confidentiality, complete documentation in a timely manner, and follow supervision and ethical guidelines.

    • Willingness to work on-site in San Mateo, CA, with consistent availability for scheduled client sessions and supervision.
