The Richardson-Spica Fellow, Artist in Residence in Photography is a one-year, part-time academic year position running from August 2026 through May 2027, responsible for providing studio-based instruction to students in grades 9-12 and post-graduates. The Fellow teaches courses spanning both chemical (darkroom/film-based) and digital photography, supporting students at foundational and advanced levels. This role fosters technical proficiency, conceptual development, and the cultivation of an individualized artistic voice within a rigorous, critique-driven studio environment. As part of the residency, the Fellow is encouraged to maintain an active artistic practice, with the opportunity to develop personal photographic work and participate in exhibitions. Compensation is $10,00 per semester. Housing and meals are included.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
* Provide studio instruction in chemical and digital photography
* Teach traditional film processes including exposure, development, and darkroom printing
* Teach digital workflows including capture, editing, and image manipulation
* Instruct students in both technical skills and conceptual approaches
* Support student growth at foundational and advanced levels
* Guide creative problem-solving and visual interpretation
* Supervise and maintain photography labs, darkrooms, and studio classrooms
* Ensure safe and responsible use of equipment and materials
* Manage inventory and assist with ordering of supplies
* Attend and support scheduled tutorial and open studio sessions
* Participate in individual and group critiques
* Evaluate student progress through projects, participation, and critiques
* Assist with preparation, installation, and documentation of exhibitions
* Contribute to specialized programming and departmental initiatives
* Participate in extracurricular activities, including off-campus trips
* Attend departmental and full faculty meetings
* Engage in a professional artistic practice during the residency
* Develop personal photographic work
* Participate in exhibitions and presentations as appropriate
* BFA required; MA or MFA in photography or related visual arts field preferred
* Documented artistic practice in photography
* Commitment to both traditional foundations and contemporary exploration
* Ability to teach students at foundational and advanced levels
* Additional teaching experience in multiple studio areas is desirable but not required
* Proficiency in photographic materials, processes, and techniques
* Broad understanding of studio art practice
* Knowledge of contemporary art issues and theory
* Technical ability to operate black-and-white and digital labs
* Experience integrating technology into instruction
* Strong communication and collaboration skills
* Ability to work successfully with highly creative students with diverse learning styles
