General Position Summary

The pay range for this position is $13.13 to $14.49 per hour, based on experience.

Positions working hours are up to 29 hours per week, based on the departments needs.

This is a seasonal position that is valid for one calendar year.

This position may remain open until filled or until receipt of sufficient number of applications.

Direct the operations of the Ceramics Craft Shop.

Examples of Responsibilities

  • Plan, Program and operate all aspects of the Senior Center Ceramics and Clay Program.
  • Assist the seniors in the art of crafting ceramic pieces to include pouring molds, removing items from molds and preparing them for painting.
  • Assist the seniors with clay techniques including slabwork, extruding, coiling, pinching and texturing.
  • Demonstrate and teach techniques for coloring and fabricating ceramic pieces.

Job Conditions:

  • Requires the ability to work with frequent interruptions, in a noisy environment.
  • Strong background record required, due to accessibility to city property and senior citizens.
  • Work inside office.
  • May require work in an environment where there are temperature fluctuations, noise, poor ventilation, dirt, dust, etc.
  • Orders, maintains and supervises the use of supplies.

Minimal Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent highly preferred.
  • Good listening and speaking skills.
  • Strong work ethic and history of dependability.
  • CPR certification.

Supplemental Information

  • Knowledge of all aspects of Ceramics craft, including using molds, pouring, removing molds, firing and final painting and refinement.
  • Knowledge of hand built clay techniques using slabwork, extruding, coiling, pinching and texturing.
  • Knowledge of institutional safety requirements and training in immediate first aid procedures to include the Heimlich Maneuver and CPR.
  • Strong teaching and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to safely operate kilns, sliptable, slabroller and wall extruder.
  • Ability to listen.
  • Ability to maintain records and inventories of supplies and materials.
  • Verbal skills to communicate information and needs to professional contacts, other workers, supervisor and the general public.
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision.
  • Strong teamwork customer-service and interpersonal skills required.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Writing skills to write messages, letters, memos, request for supplies, etc.
  • Reading skills to understand written instructions, guidelines, policies and procedures, catalogs, etc.
  • Listening skills to understand verbal instructions and information.
  • Ability to consistently demonstrate a high level of judgment and discretion required for maintaining confidential and sensitive information.

Physical Capabilities:

  • Must be capable of moving and lifting moderately heavy molds.
  • Must be capable of communicating effectively with the seniors and volunteers.
  • Ability to see well enough to read and write (corrective lens acceptable).
  • Ability to be mobile in order to move various equipment, tables, chairs, etc.
  • Ability to bend, climb, stand in order to clean required areas and move items listed above.
  • Ability to hear well enough to understand normal conversation, use telephone and to hear persons from a distance (hearing aid acceptable).
  • Speak well enough to communicate with employees, supervisors and seniors to be heard from a distance.
  • Physical mobility to move around to assist seniors with their projects.
  • Use of hands and fingers to type and operate equipment.
  • Must be able to lift boxes of clay that weigh 30 lbs.

Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA) participation is mandatory for part-time employees who work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Part-time employees are not eligible for other benefits or leave time.
