The Arts & Crafts Instructor is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading engaging arts and crafts activities for summer camp participants. Working under the supervision of the Camp Director, the instructor develops creative, age-appropriate projects that encourage campers to express themselves, build artistic skills, and explore creativity in a safe and supportive environment. The position also assists with overall camp programming and helps maintain a positive and inclusive camp atmosphere.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
• Develop and implement a structured arts and crafts program aligned with camp themes and goals. • Plan and lead daily arts and crafts activities for campers. • Create a variety of age-appropriate projects that promote creativity, self-expression, and skill development. • Set up and maintain the arts and crafts area, ensuring it is organized, welcoming, and safe for campers. • Work with camp administration to identify and request materials and supplies within established budget guidelines. • Prepare materials prior to activities and ensure proper cleanup and storage of equipment and supplies after use. • Supervise campers during activities and ensure compliance with camp safety procedures and behavioral guidelines. • Assist counselors and other camp staff in facilitating group activities and special events (e.g., talent shows, camp-wide events). • Participate in all required pre-camp trainings, including safety and mandated reporter training. • Provide basic first aid when necessary and respond appropriately to incidents or emergencies. • Maintain open communication with the Camp Director regarding camper progress, concerns, and incidents. • Promote teamwork and contribute to a positive camp experience for all participants.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER ATTRIBUTES
Strong ability to plan and lead structured activities for children. Creativity and enthusiasm for arts, crafts, and youth programming. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with campers, families, and staff. Ability to maintain professionalism and positive behavior management when supervising children. Strong leadership and teamwork skills. Ability to supervise small and large groups while ensuring health, safety, and engagement of participants. Ability to organize materials, manage time effectively, and maintain a clean program space. Knowledge of emergency procedures and commitment to following all camp safety guidelines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be 18 years of age or older. High School Diploma or GED required. Experience working with children in a camp, educational, recreational, or coaching setting preferred. Availability during the entire camp season (weekdays during camp hours). Ability to obtain First Aid, CPR, and AED certification (training provided).
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in arts education, creative programming, or youth development. Background as an educator, camp counselor, coach, performer, or youth program leader. Knowledge of child development and group management techniques.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed primarily in a camp or recreational program setting. Requires standing, supervising children, and handling arts and crafts materials. Must be able to participate in indoor and outdoor camp activities. If the position is a seasonal/temporary position, it is not eligible for union benefits.
