The City of Santa Clara and Mission College are partnering for a Student Internship Program for Summer 2026. The City is looking for Student Intern IIs to perform work in various departments Citywide. As part of this program, Student Intern IIs are required to be currently enrolled in Mission College (proof of enrollment will be required). The 2026 Summer Internship Program will run from June 2026 - August 2026. A list of current openings are provided below.
Department of Public Works:
The City of Santa Clara Department of Public Works/Traffic Engineering Division is currently seeking one (1) engineering intern. This position is a great opportunity for students who are seeking experience in the field of Civil/Traffic Engineering. The position will provide the student with diverse job responsibilities including a variety of tasks and projects. The hours are part-time, within the hours of 8 am and 5 pm, Monday through Friday.
Typical Duties:
• Assist in review of plans and files for compliance with City rules and regulations, and Citys engineering standards
• Interact and assist the public related to Traffic Engineering services
• Conduct field measurements, data collection, and traffic engineering studies
• Assist with engineering design and update record drawings
• Provide administrative support for engineering projects

Finance Department:
This position is on the Municipal Services Division Team and will support the Customer Service and Utility Billing teams.
Example duties may include:
Receive and review utility applications, business tax certificates, and related documentation for completeness and accuracy
Assist with processing utility billing inquiries and customer service requests
Support preparation of correspondence and reports related to business tax and utility billing activities
Run basic queries from departmental computer applications to support staff research and reporting
Maintain and update customer records within the utility billing system
Assist staff with monthly billing audit preparation
Contact customers by phone or email to obtain or confirm account information when needed
Help process customer service requests and service orders within the utility billing system
Assist staff with account adjustments and related administrative support tasks

Human Resources Department:
The Human Resources Department is recruiting for up to two (2) interns. One intern will work in the Recruitment/Selection, Classification/Compensation Division and the second in the Benefits/HRIS Division. The Human Resources Department is seeking a highly motivated individual who will support client departments. Qualified candidates will have strong interpersonal skills, exceptional organizational skills, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Recruitment/Selection, Classification/Compensation Division
This position will work on recruitments ranging from classified and As-needed positions. This position requires initiative, research skills, and strong customer service skills. This position will require the incumbent to be familiar with and follow set recruitment procedures and City processes and have the ability to relay this information to client Departments and candidates. The selected individual may may be required to conduct classification/compensation surveys for various classifications, data analytics, assist with reclassification studies, and will assist with various special projects as assigned.
Benefits/HRIS Division
This position will support the Benefits Team on coordinating and planning the Health and Wellness Fair scheduled for the Fall, assisting with data entry and filing, auditing work, pulling reports and other special projects as assigned. This position will require the incumbent to be detail oriented and a self-starter. Strong expertise in Excel or HRIS system is desirable.

The Library Intern will assist with the daily operations of the Adult Services unit, support library programs, and help with collection management tasks. This internship provides hands-on experience in a public library setting, allowing interns to develop customer service skills, develop organizational and problem-solving skills, learn about library resources, gain insight into library operations, and work in a community-centered environment that fosters learning and engagement.
Responsibilities:
Assist library staff with program support, such as ESL Conversation Club, RetroTech, and arts and crafts-based programs for adults.
Maintain library spaces and ensuring materials are in their correct locations.
Help set up and take down materials and equipment for library programs and events.
Engage with library patrons during events to encourage participation and provide support as needed.
Shelve, organize, shift, and pull library materials.
Assist with Local History projects such moving materials into archival-quality containers for long-term preservation.

The Library Intern will assist with the daily operations of the library, support library programs, and help with collection management tasks. Responsibilities:
Assist library staff with circulation duties, such as checking materials in and out, shelving books, and organizing materials.
Provide customer service by answering basic patron inquiries, directing patrons to appropriate resources, and assisting with computer usage.
Maintain library spaces by tidying up reading areas and ensuring materials are in their correct locations.
Set up and take down materials and equipment for library programs and events.
Assist with program facilitation, such as storytimes, book clubs, and educational workshops.
Engage with library patrons during events to encourage participation and provide support as needed.
Shelve and organize books and other library materials according to the library's classification system.

Systems Support Group
Help with the imaging and deployment of desktops, laptops, and mobile devices (Windows, iOS, etc.).
Provide level 1 technical support for end-user devices, software, and peripherals.
Assist in troubleshooting and resolving technical issues related to computers, printers, and other office devices.
Assist in managing software updates, patches, and system backups.
Provide remote and on-site support to employees for IT-related issues.
Maintain accurate documentation of support requests, resolutions, and system configurations.
Work on special projects to help improve the System Support Group Operations
Collaborate with the IT team to perform regular hardware and software inventory checks.

Qualifications:
Currently pursuing or recently graduated with a certificate, or degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
Basic knowledge of desktop and mobile device operating systems (Windows, IoS) and familiarity with common office software (Microsoft Office, Adobe).
Strong troubleshooting skills with an ability to work with both hardware and software issues.
Knowledge of networking basics (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs) is a plus.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a customer-focused attitude.
Ability to work in a team environment and independently when required.
Enthusiasm and drivee to learn and improve technical knowledge.
Prior internship or experience in IT support is a plus but not required.

The Department is seeking to fill two intern positions - one in the Engineering Division and the second in the Compliance Division. Under general supervision, the intern performs a variety of routine tasks as assigned by the Water and Sewer Utilities Department. Tasks may include, but is not limited to, the following: respond to utility map requests, assist with permitting review of water, recycled water, and sewer projects, assist with water sampling, and perform other general tasks, both in the office and in the field, as required.
