The ASAP Advisor is para-professional position in our FANCCC union. This position works closely with a cohort of 150 students to provide personalized support, academic advisement, and proactive outreach connecting them with resources to ensure timely graduation. Reporting to the ASAP Director, this role uses a case management approach to monitor student progress, promote retention, assist with the distribution of financial support, and connect students to campus resources that support their success.

Evening and occasional weekend hours may be required to best serve our students.

Typical Work Activities

  • Provide support for students on both a scheduled and drop-in basis, including information and resources related to advisement, academic planning, financial aid, and progression to ensure students meet their educational goals.
  • Assist students in overcoming personal, financial, and academic obstacles by connecting them with appropriate campus and community resources.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops on topics such as study skills, time management, career exploration, and financial literacy.
  • Conduct outreach to students identified through the College's early alert system(s) to assist in removing identified barriers to success and connecting them with appropriate resources within the College.
  • Track student performance, maintain detailed records utilizing SUNY Niagara advising and student management software, and implement interventions as needed to promote student success.
  • Work closely with faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to coordinate support services and advocate for student needs.
  • Provide advisement and registration support for ASAP students at advisement/registration sessions, including but not limited to new, readmit, transfer, current, add/drop and late registration sessions.
  • Serve as a technical resource for faculty and staff to identify campus connections and resources that foster student retention.
  • Participate in the recruitment of new students and assist in orientation sessions to acclimate them to the program to include events such as Open House, CCI Day, and New Student Orientation.
  • Stay informed about best practices in academic advising and student support through ongoing professional development.
  • Serve on college committees representing ASAP as requested.
  • Perform other related duties for ASAP as assigned.

Essential Functions

Must be able to prepare and perform presentations to groups and be proficient in interpersonal communication; ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines; must be able to and willing to travel and work evenings/weekends as needed, must have the ability to have a professional appearance and demeanor; ability to work independently and as part of a team Must be able to relate to members of the administration, faculty, staff and student must be able to operate computers, must be able to relate to multiple and diverse populations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in counseling, education, social work, psychology, higher education or related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience in academic advising, counseling, or student services within a higher education setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Proficiency in using advising and student management software.
  • A strong commitment to supporting a diverse student population and enhancing student success.
  • Experience advising or case management experience with low income, first generation and/or students with disabilities.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Master's degree in counseling, education, social work, psychology, higher education or related field.
  • 2 years or more of experience in academic advising, counseling, or student services within a higher education community college setting.
  • Experience with higher education support programs such as EOP, SUNY ASAP, SUNY ACE, or SUNY Reconnect.
  • Experience creating educational materials and publications;
  • Experience giving educational presentations.
