Summary/Overview
Asphalt Screed Operator controls the screed on an asphalt paver to spread, level, and smooth hot asphalt to precise thickness, grade, and evenness for roads and parking lots, requiring skill in machine control, material flow monitoring, basic maintenance, and strict adherence to safety protocols while working in a physically demanding, fast-paced environment.
Essential Job Functions/Requirements
- Operate the screed on an asphalt paving machine to achieve the desired thickness and smoothness of asphalt surfaces.
- Manipulate levers to control asphalt flow, screed angle, and depth for consistent mat thickness and smoothness to maintain a consistent and even surface.
- Continuously observe material flow and adjust settings to achieve final surface quality according to project plans.
- Work closely with the paver operator and other crew members to maintain production, quality standards and to ensure efficient and effective paving operations
- Perform pre-shift inspections, clean, and conduct basic maintenance inspections on the screed and paving machine.
- Adjust screed settings and extensions to achieve desired width, depth, slope, and smooth finish, often using stakes and levels.
- Adhere to all safety procedures, wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and ensure a safe work environment, often near traffic or in extreme temperatures.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Be able to run screed on Leeyboy class paver and high deck highway class paver
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience running screed.
- Strong understanding and use of electronics and joint matchers.
- Understand the operations and process of running paver
- Knowledge of the technologies of the grade and slope controls, vibratory control, extensions and cut-off shoes
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in various conditions.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for equipment upkeep.
- Good communication and teamwork.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- CDL a plus especially with tanker endorsement

- 90% of work is located within a 1-hour radius of our York, PA shop location
- Residential, commercial and municipal work
- Parking lots and commercial work. roadway paving for cities, PennDOT roadways and township roadways
- Work in various environmental conditions, including hot surfaces and uneven terrain.
- Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
