Job Description

The Assembly Technician builds large palletizing machines from start to finish using detailed blueprints and schematics. This role focuses on complex machine building rather than repetitive, station-based or assembly line work. You will work on both sub-assembly and final assembly, ensuring each machine meets precise specifications, operates safely, and functions reliably.

Responsibilities

• Assemble large palletizing machines from start to finish by reading and interpreting blueprints and schematics.
• Set up and change over equipment to support various assemblies, options, and machine features.
• Identify and use appropriate materials for each build, including plumbing or piping pneumatic and hydraulic lines.
• Install and secure specified motors and gearboxes to drive components according to engineering requirements.
• Test each assembly to verify proper fit, alignment, and function before moving to the next stage of production.
• Inspect parts and assemblies using precision measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, squares, micrometers, and protractors.
• Accurately track and log assembly time sheets for each build to support scheduling and cost tracking.
• Properly identify, document, and follow quality management system (QMS) and departmental procedures.
• Transfer completed or partially completed assemblies to the appropriate department for the next production step.
• Perform general maintenance and care of tools and equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation.
• Operate forklifts, scissor lifts, and other lift-assist devices safely and in compliance with site procedures.
• Collaborate with sub-assembly and final assembly teams while maintaining a high level of independence and ownership over assigned builds.

Shifts Available

1st shift: 6:00am - 2:30pm

2nd shift: 2:30pm -11:00pm

3rd shift: 10:45pm - 6:15am

Essential Skills

• At least 2 years of experience in mechanical assembly, preferably building machines or complex equipment from start to finish.
• At least 2 years of experience reading and interpreting blueprints and schematics.
• At least 1 year of experience using hand and power tools in an industrial or mechanical environment.
• Proven ability to follow detailed directions and work from engineering documentation.
• Demonstrated skill in blueprint reading and mechanical aptitude, including passing a blueprint and mechanical aptitude test during the interview process.
• Ability to use precision measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, squares, micrometers, and protractors.
• Experience setting up and changing over equipment to support different assemblies or features.
• Ability to plumb or pipe pneumatic and hydraulic lines safely and accurately.
• Experience installing motors, gearboxes, and other drive components on mechanical assemblies.
• Ability to inspect parts and assemblies for quality and conformance using measuring tools and visual checks.
• Capability to accurately complete and maintain assembly time sheets and related documentation.
• Ability to safely operate forklifts, scissor lifts, and other lift-assist equipment (or willingness to be trained, if applicable).
• Physical ability to lift 50+ pounds as part of regular duties.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality in a machine-building environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Prior experience building large, complex machinery or palletizing systems.
• Experience working within a quality management system (QMS) and following documented procedures.
• Familiarity with brazing and use of power tools in a production environment.
• Comfort working independently on large assemblies while coordinating with sub-assembly and final assembly teams.
• Union environment experience or familiarity with unionized production settings.
• Willingness to continuously improve skills and pursue more advanced or specialized positions as opportunities arise.

Work Environment

The role is based in a large, spacious shop environment that is organized by department and designed to accommodate very large machines. The workspace is climate controlled and supplemented with fans and heaters to maintain a manageable environment throughout the year. Assembly technicians typically work relatively independently on their assigned builds while still collaborating with team members in sub-assembly and final assembly areas. The facility uses equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, and other lift-assist tools to handle large components safely. Dress is typical for an industrial shop setting, with an emphasis on appropriate safety footwear and personal protective equipment; after conversion to a permanent role, a dedicated safety shoe stipend supports this requirement.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Saint Louis, MO.

The pay range for this position is $26.66 - $27.91/hr.
