Job Summary

The Department of Education at the University of Michigan- Flint (UM-Flint) is conducting a research project funded by the Institute of Education Sciences. We are observing the quality of mathematical instruction of the graduates from our teacher education program. This information will be used to better understand what supports they still need as they enter their first classroom as a professional.

The Department of Education at UM-Flint is seeking Part-time Assessors to administer math assessments to PreK-2nd grade students. Assessors will be responsible for managing assessment materials, communicating appropriately with school staff, and administering math assessments one-on-one to PreK-2nd grade students in Flint and surrounding areas.

Assessors will work from mid-September through October in Fall 2026; mandatory training will take place in late July/early August. Work hours will be during the school day (Monday-Friday between 8:30am and 3:30pm). Schedule flexibility is available. You will be compensated for training hours and will incur no fee for the certification process.

Responsibilities*

Assessor Role

• Assessors will visit PreK-2nd grade classrooms in Flint/surrounding areas and individually administer the Research-Based Early Math Assessment (REMA) to students.
• Assessors will be trained to administer the REMA assessment in late July/early August 2026.
• Assessments will take place in September/October 2026, Monday-Friday between 8:30am and 3:30pm.

Assessors are required to work full days, but flexibility on days of the week is available.

Assessor Tasks

• Attend in-person training in early July/late August 2026.
• Provide UM-Flint with days available to work in the designated months and be available for student assessment sessions on those days. Notify UM-Flint of any changes to the schedule.
• UM-Flint will schedule the assessments for you based on your provided availability.
• Administer individual assessments for PreK-2nd grade students in assigned schools.

Required Qualifications*

• Experience in PreK-12 settings
• Experience or coursework relevant to education, early childhood development, or related fields.
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Assessors must obtain up-to-date Michigan clearances prior to any classroom visits; UM-Flint will cover this expense.
• Reliable transportation
• Background check with the university and potentials at assigned schools
• Fluency with spoken English
• Must attend mandatory training in late July/early August and meet reliability expectations on test administration to continue into Fall.

Modes of Work

Onsite

The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

Assessors must be available for school visits between 8:30am and 3:30pm on weekdays. Assessors who are available five days a week will be given priority in hiring, but UM-Flint may also hire assessors who are available fewer days per week as necessary.
