Assistant Afterschool Teacher

The Art Farm NYC
Pay: $17.00–$18.00 per hour
Schedule: Monday–Friday, generally 2:00 PM–6:00 PM
Minimum Commitment: 2 days per week; additional days preferred.

About the Role

The Art Farm NYC is seeking an enthusiastic, dependable, and caring Assistant Afterschool Teacher to support our afterschool program serving children from age 3 through 5th grade.

The Assistant Teacher will work alongside Lead Teachers and the Director to create a safe, positive, and engaging environment where children can learn, play, and build relationships. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with children and is interested in gaining hands-on experience in education or child development.

A completed degree is not required. Candidates who are currently enrolled in college, particularly those studying Education, Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field, are encouraged to apply.

What You'll Do

  • Assist Lead Teachers with daily classroom activities and routines.
  • Support engaging, age-appropriate activities including art, science, sensory activities, group games, storytime, and other hands-on experiences.
  • Help supervise children ages 3 through 5th grade and prioritize their safety and well-being.
  • Assist with transitions between activities, snack time, cleanup, and other daily routines.
  • Support a positive, welcoming, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Help maintain classroom cleanliness and organization.
  • Assist students with age-appropriate tasks and activities while encouraging independence.
  • Support Lead Teachers with classroom management and positive behavior-management strategies.
  • Work with Lead Teachers and the Director to address student needs or concerns.
  • Help maintain accurate attendance and other required classroom paperwork.
  • Assist with maintaining student rosters and communicating any discrepancies to the Lead Teacher or Director.
  • Encourage positive interactions, teamwork, creativity, and participation among students.
  • Provide friendly and professional interactions with students, families, staff, and other site personnel.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to emergencies and follow established safety procedures.
  • Report medical incidents and other significant concerns to the Lead Teacher or Director.
  • Support Lead Teachers in ensuring activities are safe, engaging, inclusive, and appropriate for students of different ages and abilities.
  • Maintain a professional and positive attitude while representing The Art Farm NYC.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Lead Teacher or Director.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience working with children is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with children ages 3 through 5th grade is a plus.
  • College enrollment is strongly preferred, particularly for students studying Education, Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field.
  • A completed college degree is not required.
  • Patient, caring, dependable, and enthusiastic approach to working with children.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to follow direction and work effectively as part of a classroom team.
  • Comfortable assisting with children of different ages, abilities, and developmental stages.
  • Reliable and able to commit to at least 2 days per week.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and positive classroom environment.
