Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in the enforcement of animal control laws, ordinances, and regulations.
- Respond to and investigate complaints about stray, injured, dangerous, or nuisance animals.
- Capture and impound stray or uncontrolled animals using humane traps, nets, and other equipment.
- Provide care for impounded animals, including feeding, cleaning, and monitoring their health.
- Investigate cases of animal cruelty or neglect and take appropriate actions, including issuing citations and providing evidence for prosecutions.
- Educate the public on responsible pet ownership, animal safety, and local animal control laws.
- Assist in the operation and maintenance of the animal shelter.
- Maintain accurate records of daily activities, impounded animals, and investigations.
- Work closely with the Quincy Police Department, the Quincy Health Department, and other agencies.
- Participate in public outreach programs, community events, and educational sessions.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Entrance Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in animal science, veterinary technology, or related field is a plus.
- Previous experience working with animals, preferably in an animal control, veterinary, or animal shelter setting.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations related to animal control.
- Ability to handle animals safely and humanely.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in emergency situations.
- Valid Massachusetts driver's license with a good driving record.
- Physical ability to lift and restrain animals, and to work in various weather conditions.
- Availability to work weekends, holidays, and be on-call for emergencies.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Exposure to potentially dangerous animals and zoonotic diseases.
- Use of protective clothing and equipment as required.
- The hours of work are Tuesday through Saturday (8:30am - 4:30pm) to accommodate the departments operational needs
Salary Range
Start $50,630 - Step 20 $62,006
