Provincetown Independent Assistant Arts Editor The Provincetown Independent an award-winning weekly newspaper in one of the most culturally complex places in the U.S. seeks an arts writer and editor who shares our commitment to excellence in arts journalism. The Independent covers the outermost towns at the tip of Cape Cod Massachusetts. Provincetown is our cultural capital. This is a place that for generations has attracted creative people who contribute to these communities continuous renewal. Writing and editing experience at a newspaper or magazine is required for this job doing it well demands open-minded curiosity combined with research and interviewing skills. You need an eye for detail particularly on the written page. You also need to be highly organized and able to perform under pressure. The job requires building relationships and finding stories in the local arts community - including visual arts theater and music. Thats why this job cannot be done remotely. While writing and editing can be done away from the office the right candidate must be or become part of the local community including living within easy commuting distance of Provincetown. What youll do • Work directly with the editors to develop each issue. This includes keeping editorial plans in good order ensuring submissions are complete and flagging issues for discussion with editors at a weekly editorial workshop. • Scan the regions arts and culture offerings systematically taking responsibility for finding and judging the suitability of events to be added to the arts and culture storyboard. Compose and fact check arts briefs and cultural listings perfecting them for production. • Write regularly including full-length features and briefs. Edit some arts and culture pieces each week doing research querying writers fact-checking and polishing pieces under the guidance of the editors. Youll also proofread weekly arts and culture sections of the newspaper during production. Salary and benefits • The starting salary is 45000 per year. • We offer a health insurance plan we pay 60 of the premium two weeks paid vacation per year to start up to 5 paid sick days and 5 paid personal days per year.
