Academic Microbiologist

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), in partnership with IU Health Medical Group (IUHMG), is seeking a highly motivated, academically focused microbiologist to join our Division of Clinical Microbiology at the IU Health Pathology Laboratory (IUHPL).

This position offers an outstanding opportunity to contribute to a dynamic and expanding academic health system and to support the continued growth of clinical, research, and educational excellence across Indiana. The successful candidate will join a collaborative team of five academic microbiologists and will have opportunities to participate in innovation, quality improvement, and outreach initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

Academic Microbiologist:

  • Provide clinical microbiology expertise, including oversight of diagnostic testing, test interpretation, and consultative support for clinicians.
  • Participate in quality assurance, method validation, test development, and continuous improvement within the IU Health Division of Clinical Microbiology.
  • Collaborate with infection prevention, infectious diseases, pharmacy, and other clinical teams to support patient care and antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.
  • Contribute to the implementation and evaluation of new diagnostic technologies, platforms, and strategies.
  • Develop and maintain a productive scholarly program in areas such as microbiology, infectious diseases, diagnostic innovation, antimicrobial resistance, or host-pathogen interactions.
  • Teach and mentor medical students, residents, fellows (including Clinical Microbiology Fellows), and graduate students.
  • Engage in outreach, community engagement, various initiatives, and strategic program development within the division and department.
  • Foster a collaborative team culture among faculty, trainees, and staff.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary research activities across the department, school, and health system; encouraged to explore clinical/translational research.

Basic Qualifications

  • MD/DO, MD-PhD, PhD, or equivalent degree.
  • Board-certified clinical pathology or anatomic and clinical pathology.
  • Board-certified in Medical Microbiology by either the American Board of Pathology or the American Board of Medical Microbiology.
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in the State of Indiana.
  • Demonstrated commitment to academic medicine and scholarly activities.
