Tennessee State University Department of Food and Animal Sciences invites applications for a 12-month, full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor in Animal Science, preferably with a strong background in animal genetics/genomics.
The incumbent must have training in molecular genetics or genomics relevant to animal evaluation and selection in livestock production systems and is expected to perform the following: (1) develop a nationally recognized basic research program leading to peer-reviewed publications in mainstream journals and/or book chapters; and (2) initiate, generate and sustain external funding from various sources to facilitate and sustain research, teaching and student mentorship.
Specific responsibilities will include conducting basic and applied research; teaching courses in animal genetics and related areas as needed by the department; mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate students in a multicultural setting with diverse student backgrounds; and serving as research supervisors for undergraduate and graduate students in animal sciences. The successful candidate will capitalize on cross-disciplinary collaboration among faculty in the animal sciences and related areas to enhance student training and mentorship, and research endeavors. The candidate must be able to work in a multicultural setting and create an environment that fosters collegiality and teamwork.
Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate degree in Animal Genetics, Genomics, or a closely related animal science field from accredited universities. Understanding of genetic principles and basic tools of animal breeding for animal improvement and evidence of investigative work in molecular genetics or genomics applied to ruminant livestock is a plus. Previous experience at Assistant/Associate Professor level and documented evidence of research and teaching experience in ruminant livestock genetics (preferably beef cattle) is desired. Must possess and demonstrate good communication skills, a track record in innovative teaching, student training and mentorship, research and refereed publication.
