Mission or Goal of Unit:

The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. With a 132-year history, Virginia’s only dental school provides opportunities for selected, qualified individuals to study dentistry and oral health through a doctor of dental surgery (D.D.S) program, graduate specialty training programs and a dental hygiene program. The VCU School of Dentistry is one of a small number of dental schools in the country affiliated with an academic medical center, the only dental school in the Commonwealth, and the second oldest dental school in the U.S. It is one of five health sciences academic programs on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus of VCU.

Chief Purpose of this position: 

TheSchool of Dentistry’s Department of General Practice; is seeking applicants fora full-time faculty position in the Division of Prosthodontics.Responsibilities include didactic and clinical teaching in fixed, removable,and implant prosthodontics to dental students and residents; participation inservice activities and research.

Position Responsibilities: 

Teaching:
Responsibilities include clinical and didactic teaching ofpre-doctoral students and residents, in fixed, removable, and implantprosthodontics as well as mentoring undergraduate dental students and residentsin preparation for private practice, service, and scholarship. Leadership as acourse director at the pre-doctoral level is also required. All faculty membersare expected to teach in an integrated curriculum system. Teaching acrosstraditional departmental lines and in multidisciplinary teams is required.Faculty members are expected to foster transformative learning that is informedby interdisciplinary and translational research, scholarship, and creativeexpression.  

Clinical:
Faculty will supervise care in predoctoral and graduate clinics, workingcollaboratively with other faculty and staff to promote best practices, and improveclinic productivity. Participation in the Faculty Private Practice is optional;but requires a demonstrated ability to build a practice.  

Research:
Faculty members will participate in research and will work collaboratively withdental research programs and investigators.  

Service:
Faculty member will be expected to serve the Department of General Practice,Division of Prosthodontics in the School of Dentistry, and committees and taskforces as requested. In addition, participation in dentistry-related communityservice activities is strongly encouraged.

Required Qualifications: 

•DDS or DMD from an ADA accredited dental school

•Certificate or advanced degree in Prosthodontics froman ADA accredited program 

•Eligible for a dental license in Virginia 

•Ability to teach and mentor pre-doctoral dental students and residents in thepractice of clinical dentistry 

• Demonstrated experience working inand fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with apopulation of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds andexperiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU 

•Demonstrated ability to contribute to and participate in a humanisticenvironment of learning with the ability to adapt to change and embrace moderntechnology 

• For tenure eligible positions atthe Assistant Professor rank, an established research agenda and a clearpotential for external funding, as well as potential for scholarship orcreative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in thedepartment

• For tenure eligible positions at theAssociate or Professor rank, a well-develop scholarly/research portfolio withevidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate tocomplement and expand existing expertise in the department

Preferred Qualifications: 

•Experience teaching pre-doctoral students and residents in all aspects ofProsthodontics 

• Board certification in Prosthodontics
