The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra University is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position for an Assistant/Associate Professor in the Department of Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations (JMSPR) to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Journalism beginning in the spring or fall semester of 2027.

We seek candidates who are forward-looking thought leaders and practitioners who are knowledgeable of the contemporary digital, technological, ethical, and economic landscape in which journalism lives. The successful candidate should understand best practices for reporting, producing, and distributing a wide range of stories in a variety of platforms and evaluating their impact on the community.

Candidates with strong knowledge of, or background in, sports journalism and audio/visual journalism will be considered, given Hofstra's unique interdisciplinary Sports Media degree program and a new Broadcast and Streaming Journalism degree program. The successful candidate should be capable of teaching our courses that include core reporting and writing, media ethics, digital tools and ideally a range of media studies courses such as media history, sports media, and other courses in the candidate's areas of strength. They should also be able to teach advanced reporting and storytelling techniques that incorporate audio, video, photography, data, social media, and/or other emerging media.

We particularly welcome a candidate interested in expanding or deepening our program in innovative ways to reflect the current needs of the news media industry and of the students.

The successful candidate will have earned a master's or doctoral degree and have prior teaching experience or be prepared to demonstrate teaching ability. Successful candidates should demonstrate a commitment to building an inclusive community.

Tenure-track appointees are expected to establish a successful record of academic scholarship in journalism or journalism education in addition to industry-related professional output. Tenure-track appointees are also expected to participate in service and committee work for the Department, the School, and the University.

Qualifications

  • Terminal degree or doctorate in journalism, communication, or a related area of study
  • Professional experience in journalism
  • Demonstrated teaching ability
  • Excellent digital communication and writing skills

Preferred Quals Summary

  • Knowledge and skill in Sports Media and/or Broadcast/Streaming Journalism and sufficient background in mass communication theories and concepts

Hofstra University provides the above salary* as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience and education.
