The Assistant Athletic Director for Communications serves as the strategic leader of Omaha Athletics' communications operation, overseeing storytelling, media relations, digital communications, and brand messaging while supporting the department's revenue generation initiatives.

This position leads the Communications team within Omaha Athletics' integrated External Units ("Pods"), partnering daily with Marketing, Ticketing, Development, Creative Services, Broadcast Production, and coaching staffs to execute coordinated campaigns that increase attendance, ticket sales, fan engagement, donor support, sponsorship value, and overall brand awareness.

The Assistant Athletic Director is responsible for departmental communications strategy, media relations, website oversight, statistical reporting, content planning, crisis communications, and the supervision and professional development of communications staff. This position establishes departmental standards, develops efficient workflows, and ensures communications efforts align with the strategic priorities of Omaha Athletics.

The position also serves as the primary communications contact for men's basketball, softball and men's soccer while providing leadership and vision for the Communications Department in support of the department's mission to grow the Omaha Athletics brand and deliver an exceptional fan experience.

Job Duties

Responsibility Area: Strategic Leadership & Department Management Duties:

• Provide leadership and strategic direction for the Athletics Communications Department.
• Supervise, mentor, and evaluate full-time communications staff while fostering professional development.
• Establish departmental priorities, workflows, operating procedures, and performance expectations.
• Develop annual communications strategies that support departmental objectives and revenue generation initiatives.
• Evaluate new technologies, software, AI tools, and emerging communication trends to improve departmental efficiency and effectiveness.

Percentage Of Time 25 Essential Function: Yes Responsibility Area: Integrated External Unit Leadership Duties:

• Serve as the Communications representative within assigned External Unit (Pod) teams.
• Collaborate with Marketing, Ticket Sales, Development, Broadcast Production, and Creative Services to develop integrated marketing and communications campaigns.
• Participate in weekly planning meetings to ensure coordinated messaging and campaign execution.
• Develop communication strategies that directly support ticket sales, attendance growth, donor engagement, sponsorship fulfillment, and fan experience initiatives.
• Assist coaches in developing annual communication plans aligned with departmental goals.

• Lead the department's storytelling strategy across digital platforms.
• Oversee athletics website content, editorial planning, and communication calendars.
• Ensure all communications align with Omaha Athletics branding and messaging standards.
• Identify and develop compelling student-athlete, coach, alumni, and donor stories that strengthen the Omaha Athletics brand.
• Work collaboratively with Creative Services to maximize the effectiveness of digital content and promotional campaigns.

• Direct all media relations efforts for assigned sports and department initiatives.
• Coordinate interview requests, press conferences, credentialing, and media outreach.
• Oversee statistical reporting and NCAA-required game operations.
• Ensure accurate and timely publication of press releases, game notes, statistics, record books, and historical archives.
• Serve as the primary communications contact during competitions and postseason events.

• Serve as a primary communications liaison with conference offices, the NCAA, media partners, and external stakeholders.
• Assist in crisis communication planning and implementation.
• Represent Omaha Athletics at conference meetings, NCAA events, and departmental functions.
• Foster positive relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets to increase visibility for Omaha Athletics..

Required and Preferred Qualifications

Required Education

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Sports Management, Marketing, or a closely related field.

Required Experience

Three years of progressively responsible experience in athletics communications, sports information, media relations, or a related communications field, including supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Experience with NCAA LiveStats, StatBroadcast, Genius Sports, Sidearm Sports, Adobe Creative Suite, and modern content management systems.
• Excellent writing, editing, public speaking, and presentation skills.
• Experience managing crisis communications and high-profile media situations.
