    Assistant Attorney General- Commercial Transactions & Litigation- Business and Finance

    The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers, and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General. The Department of Law is organized into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units, and an operations division. The position filled through this  announcement will serve in the Business and Finance Section of the Commercial Transactions and Litigation Division.

    Job Summary

    Attorneys in this section serve as counsel for matters involving the business, financial, and property interests of the state government. Attorney will be responsible for general business litigation, including breach-of-contract actions and appeals, state procurements, the Hospital Acquisition Act, bond proceedings and lower judicatory appeals. Attorneys in this section are responsible for general representation of the Department of Administrative Services, the Georgia Lottery Corporation, the Department of Community Affairs, the State Auditor, and various State authorities. Some occasional travel may be required in this position.

    Primary Duties & Responsibilities

    •     Appears in state and federal courts to try cases, argue motions and appeals.Research and prepare pleadings, motions, and briefs.
    •     Work with expert witnesses.Participate in settlement negotiations.
    •     Prepare discovery requests and responses.Provide legal advice and/or representation to clients/agencies, drafts memo-

      randa of advice.

    •     Research pertinent legal issues; keeps abreast of recent legal developments.
    • Participate in multistate working groups.Review sign-on opportunities for letters, comments, and briefs.
    •     Draft formal opinions in response to legal questions.Respond to inquiries from citizens, legislators, and judges.
    •     Attend continuing legal education seminars as required; makes presenta-

      tions at same timeTravel, as required by the position (typically not much travel is required)

    •    Perform other related duties as assigned.

      Minimum Qualifications

      Graduation from an accredited law school and a member of the Georgia Bar

      Preferred Qualifications

      Preference will be given to applicants who possess one or more of the items below:

      • Litigation experience or interest
      • Strong research and writing skills
      • Ability to assume primary responsibility for matters and to work independently.
