Position Purpose
The Assistant Bakery Manager supports the Bakery Manager in overseeing all aspects of bakery department operations, including production, merchandising, customer service, inventory management, food safety, and associate development. This position helps ensure the department consistently delivers fresh, high-quality products while maintaining operational excellence, driving sales, and creating an exceptional customer experience. The Assistant Bakery Manager serves as a key department leader and may assume responsibility for bakery operations in the Bakery Manager's absence.
Key Responsibilities Customer Service & Sales
- Deliver outstanding customer service by assisting customers with product selection, special orders, and celebration cake needs.
- Promote bakery products through suggestive selling and product knowledge.
- Ensure bakery displays, cases, and tables are fully stocked, visually appealing, and customer-ready.
- Address customer concerns and special requests promptly and professionally.
- Support sales growth through effective merchandising, promotions, and seasonal programs.
Department Operations
- Assist in coordinating daily bakery production and merchandising activities.
- Ensure bakery products are produced, packaged, labeled, and displayed according to company standards.
- Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering supplies and ingredients to support sales while minimizing waste.
- Maintain clean, organized, and efficient production and sales areas.
- Support execution of company merchandising initiatives, promotional events, and seasonal programs.
Leadership & Team Development
- Assist with supervising, coaching, training, and developing bakery associates.
- Support onboarding and skill development for new team members.
- Help establish performance expectations and provide ongoing feedback.
- Foster a positive, team-oriented work environment focused on customer service and operational excellence.
- Lead by example through professionalism, accountability, and strong work habits.
Food Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, health department, and company standards.
- Monitor product quality, freshness, dating, rotation, and storage procedures.
- Ensure associates follow safe food handling and preparation practices.
- Maintain department readiness for food safety and operational audits.
- Identify and address safety concerns promptly to maintain a safe environment for customers and associates.
Financial Stewardship
- Assist with managing department sales, labor, inventory, and expenses.
- Support shrink and waste reduction efforts through proper ordering, production planning, and inventory controls.
- Monitor product movement and adjust production levels to meet customer demand.
- Help achieve department sales, profitability, and productivity goals.
- Contribute to driving operational efficiencies and strong in-stock conditions.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous bakery, food service, retail, or supervisory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of bakery products, production processes, food safety, and merchandising practices preferred.
- Strong leadership, communication, and customer service skills.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, carrying, and twisting.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to work around bakery equipment, ovens, and food production areas.
- Ability to safely operate bakery equipment in accordance with company standards.

A successful Assistant Bakery Manager demonstrates strong leadership, maintains exceptional food safety and quality standards, develops and supports associates, drives department sales and profitability, minimizes shrink and waste, executes merchandising programs effectively, and delivers an outstanding customer experience while contributing to the overall success of the store.
