ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
This role works directly with Middle School students, teaching Physical Education, shaping how 7th–9th graders experience movement, teamwork, and competition during a formative stretch of their education. As Assistant Baseball Coach, you'll work alongside the Head Baseball Coach , helping students with your experience in the following areas: instructional excellence, knowledge of baseball, coaching and leadership, Harvard-Westlake cultural aptitude, and character.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
This role splits time between teaching Physical Education and supporting the baseball program, with administrative and occasional travel responsibilities.
Physical Education Instruction
- Create a positive, engaging, and inclusive learning environment that promotes lifelong health, wellness, and physical activity
- Design and implement developmentally appropriate lessons aligned with the grades 7–9 Physical Education curriculum, teaching movement skills, fitness concepts, teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy decision-making
- Establish clear expectations for student behavior and participation, assess student learning regularly with meaningful feedback, and collaborate with colleagues to maintain consistency across the PE program
- Maintain current knowledge of best practices in physical education instruction through ongoing professional development
Baseball Program & Player Development
- Assist the Head Baseball Coach in planning and implementing practices that develop student-athletes both individually and as a team
- Teach proper skill development, game strategy, baseball IQ, and sportsmanship appropriate for high school student-athletes
- Help evaluate player performance and contribute to a competitive culture built on effort, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Stay current on baseball coaching trends and player development methods, and provide guidance to student-athletes pursuing baseball opportunities beyond high school when appropriate
Coaching & Administrative Responsibilities
- Support all aspects of the baseball program as directed by the Head Coach and Athletic Department, including practice planning, game preparation, scouting, and player development
- Supervise student-athletes before, during, and after practices and competitions, and communicate effectively with the Head Coach, Athletic Department, Sports Performance, Sports Medicine, faculty, and families
- Assist with equipment management, field setup, facility maintenance, and inventory, and attend required school, league, CIF, and departmental meetings
- Maintain a valid California driver's license and acceptable driving record; occasional transportation of ninth-grade baseball student-athletes between the Middle School campus and Harvard-Westlake athletic facilities is required, using school-approved vehicles and in accordance with school transportation policy
Community Responsibilities
- Participate in school events, professional development days, and community programming as appropriate to the role
- Collaborate across departments and campuses in support of the school's mission
- Additional duties as assigned

Required
- Bachelor's degree, teaching credential, or demonstrated ability to meet Harvard-Westlake's teaching requirements
- Demonstrated experience teaching or working with middle-school-aged students
- Baseball playing experience at a minimum of the varsity high school level
- Baseball coaching experience at a minimum of the varsity high school level
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, coaches, administrators, parents, and students
- Valid California driver's license with an acceptable driving record, and the ability to meet Harvard-Westlake's requirements for transporting students
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification, or ability to obtain upon hire
- A high standard of personal integrity, professionalism, and sportsmanship, given the visibility of this role with students
- Commitment to inclusive practice and the ability to work effectively with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds
Preferred
- Collegiate or professional baseball playing experience
- Collegiate baseball coaching experience
SCHEDULE
This is a 12-month, in-person position. Weekdays follow the Middle School class schedule for Physical Education instruction, with baseball practices, games, and off-season training extending into afternoons, evenings, and weekends during the competitive season. Some travel between the Middle School campus and Harvard-Westlake athletic facilities is required, including occasional transportation of student-athletes using school-approved vehicles.
COMPENSATION
This is an exempt position with a base compensation of $70,000 - $80,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications.

ABOUT HARVARD-WESTLAKE
Harvard-Westlake is an independent school with two campuses in Los Angeles and approximately 1,600 students enrolled in grades 7–12. Classes for grades 7–9 take place on the Middle School campus in the Holmby Hills neighborhood, while grades 10–12 are housed on the Upper School campus in Studio City. A third campus, River Park, focused on athletics and recreation, is scheduled to open in Fall 2026.
