Assistant Controller (Senior Accounting Manager) Location: Nipomo, CA (Onsite) Reports To: Corporate Controller Salary: $100,000 – $110,000

Position Overview We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to support and elevate accounting operations across multiple entities. This is a high-impact, hands-on role ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment and takes full ownership of their work.

You’ll be a key player in financial reporting, process improvement, and team leadership - working closely with senior leadership to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and scalability across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Close

  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
  • Prepare and review journal entries, including accruals and adjustments
  • Maintain general ledger accuracy and integrity
  • Perform detailed account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies

Construction & Inventory Accounting

  • Support job costing and WIP schedules in a construction-based environment
  • Ensure accurate inventory tracking and cost allocation
  • Partner with operations to validate project costs and margins

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Prepare monthly financial reporting packages, including:
  • Profit & Loss Statements
  • Balance Sheets
  • Variance analysis with actionable insights
  • Analyze trends and present clear financial insights to leadership
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting processes

Leadership & Process Ownership

  • Oversee Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions
  • Manage and support AP/AR team members
  • Resolve escalated issues including billing discrepancies, collections, and vendor concerns
  • Drive accountability and improve workflows across accounting operations
  • Act as a key liaison between accounting, operations, and leadership

 Systems & Process Improvement

  • Utilize ERP systems (Service Titan, Acumatica, NetSuite, Sage, or similar)
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and scalability
  • Leverage advanced Excel for reporting and financial analysis

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with project managers and operations teams to ensure financial accuracy
  • Communicate proactively around risks, issues, and opportunities
  • Build strong relationships across departments to support company goals

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 4–6+ years of progressive accounting experience (construction or project-based preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and accrual-based accounting
  • Experience with financial reporting, general ledger, and month-end close
  • Familiarity with ASC 606 and ASC 842
  • ERP experience (Service Titan, Acumatica, NetSuite, Sage, or similar)
  • Advanced Excel skills (XLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, data analysis)
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities

Preferred

  • Experience leading or supervising accounting staff
  • Background in job costing and WIP schedules
  • Exposure to budgeting, forecasting, or FP&A
