Job Title: Assistant Construction Manager (Contract-to-Hire)
Locations: Chesterfield, MO (Primary) | Columbus, OH (Optional Work Location)

Our client is seeking an experienced Assistant Construction Manager for a contract-to-hire opportunity supporting complex EPC and construction management projects. This role will assist senior project leadership in managing all phases of construction execution, from pre-construction through project closeout, across a diverse portfolio including aviation, commercial, industrial, energy, manufacturing, oil & gas, process, water, and transmission & distribution projects. Experience in Power Generation, Water, Transmission, and/or Distribution is strongly preferred.

Position Overview

The Assistant Construction Manager will support the Construction Project Manager, Project Manager, Site Manager, and/or EPC Project Manager in the day-to-day execution of project operations. This includes oversight and coordination of safety, quality, schedule, cost control, contracts, subcontractors, procurement, documentation, and field execution activities. The role requires strong organizational skills, field awareness, and the ability to coordinate multiple project functions in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support execution of project safety programs, training, and compliance initiatives in coordination with project leadership
  • Assist in maintaining strong client relationships and support project-related communications and reporting
  • Participate in project risk reviews and coordinate with legal and project leadership as required
  • Assist in development and implementation of Project Execution Plans, Quality Assurance Plans, Safety & Health Plans, Procurement Plans, Staffing Plans, and Project Organization Charts
  • Support negotiation, administration, and execution of contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders, and change orders
  • Assist with site mobilization and demobilization planning and execution
  • Support permitting efforts and ensure project compliance with applicable regulations
  • Assist with RFP development, subcontractor bidding, scope definition, and award processes
  • Manage and support downstream contract administration including RFIs, submittals, meeting minutes, and change management documentation
  • Assist with cost tracking, scheduling, WBS development, forecasting, and progress reporting
  • Prepare project status updates including risks, schedule performance, cost tracking, and cash flow reporting
  • Support invoicing, pay application processing, and contract financial tracking
  • Maintain and implement project documentation control systems and filing standards
  • Verify subcontractor compliance with insurance, licensing, and contractual requirements
  • Support audits, quality reviews, safety inspections, and project performance assessments
  • Assist with materials management including receiving, inventory control, storage, and logistics coordination
  • Work with field teams and superintendents to ensure subcontractor compliance with safety, quality, and schedule requirements
  • Support project closeout including turnover documentation, warranty coordination, and final recordkeeping
  • Assist with craft labor coordination including staffing support, labor tracking, classifications, productivity, and cost monitoring
  • Support equipment planning and utilization to ensure project needs are met
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Construction, Engineering, or related field preferred
    • Equivalent construction experience may be considered in lieu of degree
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant construction or field project experience required
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint; Access a plus)
  • Experience with scheduling, document control, cost tracking, and project management tools preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with excellent organizational ability
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment
  • Experience working on construction projects in industries such as aviation, commercial, energy, manufacturing, oil & gas, process, transportation, water, or transmission & distribution preferred
  • Basic understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Must meet company driving requirements
