FCDOT is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Assistant Construction Manager to join the Special Projects Division. Reporting to the Construction Manager, this position will assist with day-to-day construction oversight and coordination for the Richmond Highway Bus Rapid Transit (RHBRT) project – a large, complex, federal funded capital program with significant regional mobility and economic development impacts. The ideal candidate will bring strong expertise in managing construction activities to ensure compliance with contract requirements, engineering plans and specifications, project schedules, budgets, safety requirements, and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grant obligations.
Working in a highly collaborative environment, the assistant construction manager serves as one of the county's primary field representatives during construction, helping resolve technical and construction issues, coordinating field activities, monitoring project performance, and supporting timely project delivery. This position offers an excellent opportunity for an experienced transportation construction professional to contribute to one of the largest transportation investments in Fairfax County's history.
Responsibilities include:
- Assisting the construction manager in providing construction oversight to ensure the project is delivered in accordance with approved scope, schedule, budget, and federal requirements;
- Supporting documentation, progress tracking, safety coordination, and field decision making for day to day construction activities;
- Monitoring construction activities to confirm compliance with contract requirements, engineering plans and specifications, project schedules, budgets, and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grant obligations;
- Supporting procurement process for quality assurance consultants and construction contractor for the RHBRT project;
- Coordinating closely with the construction manager, construction management consultants, contractors, designers, utility companies, and partner agencies to support field inspections, issue resolution, and daily construction oversight;
- Partnering with Project Controls staff to monitor schedule progress, cost performance, risk registers, and corrective action plans, ensuring timely reporting and adherence to escalation protocols;
- Reviewing engineering plans, contractor submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs), change orders, and other construction documentation to ensure compliance with project requirements;
- Assisting with implementation of the Quality Management Program (QMP) and coordinating quality control and quality assurance activities with QC and QA consultants;
- Assisting with contract administration, utility coordination, and implementation of Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plans to support safe and efficient construction.
- Conducting site visits and field inspections to monitor construction progress and ensure work is performed in accordance with approved plans, specifications, and contract requirements;
- Assisting with risk management, issue resolution, and claims avoidance through proactive coordination, thorough documentation, and effective communication with project partners;
- Assisting the Construction Manager to prepare and present technical briefings, construction updates, and project status reports for senior leadership, partner agencies, and elected officials;
- Attending public meetings, including evening meetings as needed, and presenting project information to community stakeholders and advisory groups; and
- Performing other duties, as assigned.
