    Description

    Cherry Bekaert Recruiting is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Assistant Controller to support and help lead the accounting function for our growing non-profit organization. This role will oversee core accounting operations, ensure accuracy and compliance, and play a key role in financial reporting, audit readiness, and internal controls.

    The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with strong technical accounting skills and experience managing teams in a mission-driven environment.
    Key Responsibilities
    Accounting Operations & Oversight
    • Supervise and support the accounting team, including Accounts Payable (AP), Accounts Receivable (AR), and payroll functions
    • Review transactions for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with policies and procedures
    • Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end close processes
    Financial Reporting & Analysis
    • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules
    • Assist with financial statement preparation and consolidation
    • Support preparation of internal and external financial reports
    Compliance & Reporting
    • Support preparation and review of Form 990 and other regulatory filings
    • Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
    • Assist with audit preparation, including managing audit workpapers and coordinating with external auditors
    Budgeting & Planning
    • Partner with leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes
    • Monitor budget-to-actual performance and provide variance analysis
    Internal Controls & Process Improvement
    • Help maintain and strengthen internal controls and financial processes
    • Identify and recommend opportunities for process improvements and efficiencies
    Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred)
    • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a non-profit environment
    • Prior experience overseeing accounting staff or teams
    • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
    • Experience with financial statement consolidation and audit support
    Technical Skills
    • Experience with ERP systems required; Oracle Fusion experience is a plus
    • Proficiency with Excel and financial reporting tools
