As Diesel Laptops continues operating within the Snap-on structure, we are focused on strengthening financial discipline, process consistency, reporting accuracy, and scalable accounting operations. We are seeking a hands-on Assistant Controller who can help lead the accounting function while also directly supporting the daily execution required to keep the department accurate, timely, and accountable.
Position Summary
The Assistant Controller will support the CFO and accounting leadership by helping manage day-to-day accounting operations, month-end close, financial reporting, balance sheet integrity, internal controls, NetSuite process discipline, and accounting team execution.
This role is designed for a strong accounting professional who can operate as a player/coach. The Assistant Controller must be comfortable leading people, improving processes, reviewing work, and also getting directly involved in reconciliations, reporting, analysis, and issue resolution when needed.
The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting knowledge, financial reporting experience, systems discipline, and the ability to help stabilize and elevate the accounting department in a fast-moving business environment.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Operations and Month-End Close
Lead and support the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
Prepare, review, and analyze journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
Review balance sheet accounts to ensure accuracy, completeness, and appropriate documentation.
Identify and resolve accounting discrepancies, reconciling items, and process gaps.
Support the development and enforcement of close calendars, deadlines, and department accountability.
Ensure accounting transactions are recorded in accordance with company policies and applicable accounting standards.
Financial Reporting and Analysis
Assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements, management reporting packages, and financial analysis for leadership review.
Prepare and analyze financial results, including revenue, expenses, margins, cash activity, working capital, and key business trends.
Support variance analysis by comparing actual results to budget, forecast, and prior periods.
Provide timely and accurate reporting to internal stakeholders, corporate finance, auditors, and other approved third parties.
Assist with financial reporting improvements to increase clarity, consistency, and decision-usefulness.
Forecasting, Budgeting, and Business Support
Support the CFO and finance leadership with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities.
Assist with forecast updates, expense projections, departmental reporting, and operational financial analysis.
Partner with business leaders to understand financial drivers, explain variances, and support better business decision-making.
Help identify risks, opportunities, and trends that may impact financial performance.
Support ad hoc financial modeling, reporting, and analysis as needed.
NetSuite and Systems Discipline
Serve as a key accounting user for NetSuite and help drive consistent system usage across the accounting function.
Support NetSuite process improvements related to general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash application, reconciliations, reporting, and workflow.
Ensure accounting records, classifications, and supporting documentation are maintained accurately in NetSuite.
Identify system or process issues that impact reporting accuracy, close timing, or department efficiency.
Partner with internal stakeholders to improve reporting structure, data integrity, and accounting workflows.
Internal Controls and Compliance
Support the design, implementation, and enforcement of internal controls across accounting operations.
Help ensure appropriate segregation of duties, approval workflows, documentation standards, and transaction review procedures.
Identify control gaps and recommend corrective actions.
Support audit preparation, external CPA requests, corporate reporting requests, and other compliance-related activities.
Protect company assets by ensuring accounting procedures are followed consistently and exceptions are escalated appropriately.
Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Cash Oversight
Provide leadership and oversight for AP, AR, collections, cash application, and related accounting workflows.
Review and support customer account activity, payment application, credit memos, collection reporting, vendor payments, and account reconciliations.
Help ensure AP and AR processes are accurate, timely, and aligned with internal controls.
Support resolution of escalated vendor, customer, and internal accounting issues.
Work cross-functionally to improve communication and process discipline between accounting, sales, operations, and leadership.
Team Leadership and Department Execution
Help lead, coach, and develop members of the accounting team.
Provide day-to-day guidance, review work product, clarify priorities, and help ensure deadlines are met.
Create structure, accountability, and follow-through within the department.
Support cross-training, documentation of procedures, and continuity of key accounting functions.
Model a hands-on leadership approach by assisting directly with accounting work when needed.
Promote a culture of accuracy, urgency, ownership, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, including experience with month-end close, reconciliations, financial reporting, and general ledger accounting.
Prior experience supervising, leading, or mentoring accounting staff.
Strong understanding of accounting principles, internal controls, financial statements, and accounting operations.
Experience with ERP systems required. NetSuite experience strongly preferred.
Strong Excel skills and ability to work with large data sets, reconciliations, and financial schedules.
Demonstrated ability to prepare financial analysis, explain variances, and support business reporting needs.
Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment with accuracy, attention to detail, and sound judgment.
Strong communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with leadership, operations, sales, HR, and external partners.
Preferred Qualifications
CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred but not required.
Experience in a private-equity, corporate, multi-entity, distribution, technology, software, SaaS, automotive, or equipment-related business environment preferred.
Experience supporting budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and management reporting.
Experience improving accounting processes, close timelines, system workflows, and internal controls.
Experience with audit support, corporate reporting requests, and compliance documentation.
