The Summit County Prosecutors office in Akron, Ohio has multiple openings for an assistant prosecutor across all divisions. There are two classifications: a Junior Prosecutor who will typically handle felonies of the third, fourth, and fifth degree, salary range $82,409.60 to $87,568.00, and a Senior Prosecutor who will typically handle felonies of the first and second degree, salary range $92,705.60 to $105,580.80.

The position also carries OPERS pension benefits and eligibility for federal student loan forgiveness. This is a rotating position that allows for promotion to Senior Prosecutor, Major Trial, and Supervisory positions based on the needs of the Office and the development of the employees legal and leadership skills. The Office will also consider recently-admitted attorneys with no prior experience at a starting salary of $77,251.20 with an initial assignment to handle delinquency or abuse neglect and dependency matters in Juvenile Court.

Assistant Prosecuting Attorney General Overview

The Summit County Prosecutors Office is devoted to making our community a better and safer place for families and crime victims. We fairly, ethically, and truthfully seek justice for all. Under general direction, the Assistant Prosecuting Attorney will assess and prepare each case by reviewing the investigation, speaking with witnesses, and assessing any mitigating factors in order to resolve a case through trial or plea negotiations.

Required Qualifications

• Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio with no history of disciplinary action. • Any combination of training and work experience which indicates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below.

• Experience working with clients of diverse racial, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds preferred. • Experience working in a fast-paced legal environment preferred. • Excellent critical-thinking, problem-solving, and organizational skills. • The capacity to manage multiple projects and assignments simultaneously often with competing deadlines. • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly with a wide range of people. • Ability to derive and implement creative solutions. • Works well in a positive work environment that values a team approach. • The ability to handle sensitive information while preparing and presenting complex cases. • Organize and present effective arguments in court, interview, and cross-examine witnesses, victims, defendants, and law enforcement personnel.

Job Duties

• This position prepares and presents cases to be tried in court, researches and prepares briefs and opinions, negotiates resolutions to cases, prepares a variety of legal documents, may supervise law clerks, interns, and maintains a working knowledge of the law. • Coordinates with advocates to provide services to victims and meets with crime victims and family members to provide an insight into the court process and procedures. • Meets with law enforcement officers, defense attorneys, judges, and court personnel to discuss and review cases. • Identifies impacts of trauma and modifies legal practices to enable traumatized witnesses to safely participate in proceedings. • Prepare cases for trial or plea negotiations by reviewing all evidence, facts, and communications with witnesses. • Questions and cross-examines witnesses. • Participates in pre-hearing conferences, issues subpoenas, and other appropriate orders relating to the discovery process, prepares for and presents evidence to grand juries. • Maintains records consistently, updates case management system, and answers correspondences in a timely fashion. • Participates in internal and external conferences and meetings. • Serves as a liaison with other agencies and the community. • Independently researches, interprets, and applies legal and administrative principles to each case. • Engages in continuing education, both legal and non-legal, to stay up to date on best practices and new ideas.
