Location: Gilson Middle School, Valdez, Alaska
Position Summary
Gilson Middle School is seeking a dedicated and motivated Assistant Coach for the 20262027 school year. The ideal candidate will provide leadership, mentorship, and organization for a successful athletic program that emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal growth.
The coach will instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategies, and physical conditioning needed for individual and team successwhile fostering character, self-discipline, and pride of accomplishment in every student-athlete.
Qualifications
- Ability to organize, coordinate, and supervise all aspects of a middle school sports program.
- Prior successful coaching experience in the assigned sport (preferred).
- Strong knowledge of the technical aspects, rules, and current best practices of the sport.
- Demonstrated ability to serve as a positive role model for students through leadership, instruction, and conduct.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Willingness to continue professional development through clinics, conferences, and training opportunities.
Reports To
Athletic Directors (with evaluation and support from the Middle School Principal).
Primary Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and oversee all practices, competitions, and program operations.
- Ensure compliance with district, state, and conference athletic policies and regulations.
- Promote a positive, inclusive, and safe team culture that supports academic and personal growth.
- Mentor student-athletes in the areas of sportsmanship, teamwork, and character.
- Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, staff, and the broader community.
- Maintain equipment inventory and ensure facilities are properly cared for.
- Support student-athletes in pursuing future educational or athletic opportunities.
- Collaborate with the athletic directors on scheduling, budgeting, and program development.
