    Global medical education exchanges at the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah (SFESOM) are currently established at multiple sites with five memos of understanding in place at medical schools in Ghana, Rwanda, Peru, Colombia, and South Korea. Urban underserved clinical rotations at the SFESOM are currently established within a network of student-led clinics (SLCs) and longitudinal integrated clerkship (LIC) sites. These clinical experiences are anchored by robust graduate certificate programs, creating a longitudinal thread of didactics and applied learning through scholarly research and community engagement experiences throughout the mission-driven MD program. Further development in thematically aligned medical education programs that reflect the SFESOM's mission is anticipated, particularly with the anticipated opening of University of Utah Health's West Valley Hospital.

    Job Summary

    The SFESOM seeks a physician for the position of Assistant Dean of Global and Urban Underserved Medical Education (ADGUME). In partnership with the Senior Associate Dean of Rural, Underserved, and Regional Medical Education and the Assistant Dean of Rural Medical Education and Pathways Innovation, the ADGUME collaborates with faculty and staff to design and implement innovative strategies for global and urban underserved medical education, including integration within the broader context of faculty-led educational programs targeting medically underserved populations at the SFESOM and the broader University of Utah community. The ADGUME supports the University of Utah's goals and mission and acts as a catalyst between departments, faculty, staff, students, and external entities. The ADGUME will report directly to the Senior Associate Dean of Rural, Underserved, and Regional Medical Education. This newly created position holds salary support of 0.5 FTE.

    Roles & Responsibilities

    Develops and implements a vision for global and urban underserved medical education programs in partnership with local, regional, and global medical education leaders, ensuring alignment with the SFESOM mission and educational goals.

    Oversees all aspects of the global and urban underserved medical education program, including ensuring full compliance with internal policies and accreditation-related, regulatory, and legal standards.

    Represents the SFESOM global and urban underserved medical education programs to internal and external parties, including University offices, local/regional/international partners, national medical education consortia, and accrediting bodies.

    Serves as a spokesperson for the SFESOM global and urban underserved medical education programs to premedical advisors, educational institutions, legislative and regional governing bodies, donors, and the broader academic community, strengthening relationships that support program development and sustainability.

    Works together with the broader University of Utah community, including the Health Sciences colleges, the School of Dentistry, and other programs in the SFESOM to coordinate global and urban underserved medical education programs, including opportunities for interprofessional education.

    Provides leadership and mentorship to faculty and staff engaged in global and urban underserved medical education teaching threads in the curriculum, including supporting faculty director(s) and staff engaged in the graduate certificate programs in Global and Tribal, Rural, and Urban Underserved (TRU) Medicine and lecturing as a guest instructor in these and other programs.

    Provides leadership and mentorship to faculty and staff engaged in the selection, onboarding, engagement, education, and assessment of students involved in global and urban underserved medical education activities and career paths.

    Manages partnerships with international academic medical schools to facilitate medical student exchange and works closely with staff to manage all international electives for outgoing SFESOM medical students and all visiting international medical students, including all required credentialing and vetting for international visiting students.

    Works closely with staff to manage revenue-generating, fee-based credentialing and vetting services and functions for non-student international visitors (e.g., faculty, residents, researchers) participating in activities in UUH clinical environments (i.e., "Department-Sponsored International Visitors")

    Leads and/or attends relevant operational, educational program, executive, interdisciplinary, and other relevant committee and council meetings

    Qualifications

    MD or DO degree from an accredited institution

    Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency

    Current board certification in a recognized medical specialty

    Eligibility for an unrestricted Utah physician and surgeon license (see DOPL requirements)

    Demonstrated leadership experience, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work with various constituencies that will help further the global and urban underserved medical education programs at the SFESOM, including international partners

    Strong experience in medical education, including experience building an academic research program in global and/or underserved medical education

    Contemporary knowledge of the culture of academic medicine and understand the issues of wellness, diversity, academic performance that medical students face

    Previous experience in living and/or working in a global and/or urban underserved community is desirable
